The D pairings in general have been pretty good this year. Gio/Bo playing hard in the hard situations. Wideman/Brodie look awesome, then whoever dresses last pair has been fine

No kidding! Some people here does not look at the overall thing. Most are just looking for how many points/goals or whatever a player gets. If they don't see the player in question (on this note, Giordano), they think he is struggling and will not get back up. Right now I like our Top 7 defensemen with Wideman playing with Butler(i still want Brodie to stay with Wideman but Butler is doing good, while TJ seems to fit in with Smith). Cory Sarich is a good spare defenseman who can fit in any pairings if he has to. Babchuk on the other hand does not have any place for this team. Gio is not perfect, he makes some mistakes because sometimes he thinks he is Superman out there and thinks he needs to do everything in order to win. Overall, I am happy with our D's and Gio.

Lets not talk about Mark Giordano. Wether he's giving the pucks up in the defensive zone, leaving forwards open in front of the net or breaking his stick or whiffing on shots at the point on the PP it's been a difficult year for him after a below average season last year.
I'm the guy that created the original Giordano thread when he went to Russia and have always been a fan of his but something just isn't right with him at the moment as his offensive game isn't even good and that's always been a strong part of his game. I agree with most in that he's probably having a difficult time adapting to the extra ice time and defensive responsibilities. Hopefully he either adjusts or he gets more sheltered minutes as at times he's hurting the team.

Everyone goes through extended crappy periods, it just happens. If all players played perfectly every year we'd have 5 cups by now.
He's trying to do too much on the ice, what made him very good before was that he played a simple game, now he's trying to act like a top pairing defensemen and he's over thinking the game.
He'll be fine.

I've noticed that Hartley is starting to give Butler a lot more ice time as last night he got the same amount of ice time as Gio. Probably a good thing to spread the ice time around a bit more and lessen the burden on Gio.

Butler has also simplified his game and he's being rewarded for it. He's not putting himself into panic positions
Gio is

Someone pointed this out earlier. Where do you hide him without disturbing the other pairings? I suppose he could work with Wideman, but he would have to focus a lot more on the defensive side. Wouldnt want to take away his offensive game. Then you basically have to put Brodie on the 1st line, and i do not think that would be a good idea. Just have to hope he turns it around IMO...or pull the panic cord and trade him

Read an article yesterday saying Hartely thinks he is "Mr consistent". Hartely wants him to join the rush more and thinks Butler has the tools to do it. He joined the rush last night on some plays, one leading to a goal, so hopefully Butler feels more comfortable going forward with this challenge. I personally like him at the 5-6 spot, but i am not the coach.

+3 last night with over 22 minutes. If he could maintian decent play it would definately help this team down the stretch. It seems he and Hartley have gone though a feeling out process since the beginnning of the season and there is a comfort level now.

He's been playing better as of late, but he still makes too many bad decisions in the defensive zone for my liking. Either mindlessly throwing the puck up the boards to the other team's pointmen or hanging on to it for too long. If he could work on this I'd be more comfortable with him on the second pairing.

Yeah, +3 for Butler last night, but SJ showed no physicality whatsoever. I still think Butler struggles with physical play and until he shows me otherwise, I am not yet convinced on his improved play.
Giordano has definitely struggled since his injury last year, but i do think he is starting to get it back. A little less icetime would help (come on Butler). Kipper should help - I think the D as a group looked a lot more confident in their own end last night.
And if he would just throw a hit or two, I think it would help his psyche.

Not only has Gio struggled badly for the most part this year and has made some glaringly bad mistakes, it looks like he's seriously skating in cement much of the time as well.
He's really been a shell of himself since that injury last year. Sad to see.

Gio is taking far too long to make a decision when he has the puck. This is the single biggest reason for his struggles this year. It's like he doesn't trust himself or is scared of making a bad play.....which leads to him making a bad play. If he just moved the puck a little faster we wouldn't even be talking about him.
Oh, and yes, his skating has suffered a little since his injury, but he usually isn't out of position because of it so it's not that big of an issue.

If we can get Gio back, and get rid of this Jor fellow, we'll pretty much be rolling defensively and offensively, and if Kipper can just be Kipper, we'll be in the playoffs, 100 percent.

Has been brutal for the last year. Don't know what is up with this guy but he needs to figure it out fast. Every time he touches the puck I cringe.
