EE is the discipline that everyone gets into these days. Chemical with a Petroleum minor is the hardest to get into and requires something like a 3.7 GPA coming out of first year. I haven't really noticed any arrogance from the other disciplines.

I did horrendous in first year. Ended up in EE. I'm pretty happy with my discipline though and the only reason I would've preferred Mechanical is job prospects and pay.

Civil is still seen as the easiest...

I regard Electrical as the most difficult of all of them (no, that's not my discipline). I'm surprised that some of you say your surprised that people who encounter engineers in life/work say they are arrogant.

It doesn't take much to find an online debate on every forum out there where someone pipes up "I'm an engineer". Especially on automotive forums. Lots of guys with completely unrelated Engineering degrees in totally inapplicable industries chiming in on how they know more about cars because they are engineers. I don't see that too often with other disciplines. There were lots of people I went to school with who's sole source of self-worth was being an engineer(ing student).

I find EE offers a lot of enjoyment professionally. There is a significant science component to it, as well as being easily accessible.

What turned me off of the other disciplines is the long lead-time to gratification. Yes, you could design a pipeline or bridge or chemical plant, but to see those come to fruition, you're looking at years. If you want to design a circuit and write firmware, you're looking at weeks or less (leaving out the project management and nailing down requirements).

I am always surprised when I find ex-interns go to EPCM type companies once they graduate. My first taste of electronics and embedded development, I never wanted to do anything else.
