The spot in front of your house is not "yours". If the spot is taken, find another one. It's honestly that simple.

I also live in a cul-de-sac, but I don't have a garage or a parking pad. I know that I legally don't own the spot in front of my house, but c'mon, if you take my spot, you're a dick. My cul-de-sac is huge with tons of parking on a communal green space, so I'm extra choked when someone stops in front of my house.

I'm largely with you on this issue, continuously parking in front of someone else's house is kind of a dick move, but what's this neighborhood seniority business? Are you saying that if they had lived on the block first they'd be entitled to that spot?

No doubt you are dealing with an inconvenient and somewhat annoying situation but your sense of entitlement is a bit over the top. He is parking on a public roadway.
He's probably on his own chatboard right now (CalgaryCrack.Com) starting a thread about parking in a cul de sac to complain about the preppie college boy still living in his parents basement that thinks he's the King of The Cul De Sac. He's probably commenting on how he laid off the glass pipe for a while so that he could finally afford a car only to sense preppie boy's rage when our crackhead friend parks in what is clearly the closest available parking stall to his own house too (coincidentally in front of yours).
He probably doesn't understand the term "neighborhood seniority" (neither do I...is your Cul de Sac unionized?) and longs for his old Cul De Sac in Forest Lawn where he could just blow up the car of whomever was questioning his parking choices. BUT he has probably made a conscious decision to try and turn his life around, so he knew he had to move to a better place where people had their values in the right place so that he could start taking the many baby steps he needs to get his life back on track.
He may be commenting in his own forum on how if it's that big of a problem he hopes you'll come chat with him so that something can be figured out and hoping that you're not the type of delta bravo neighbour that involves the municipality over something as trivial as parking on a public road without first having a congenial conversation.
Just because you have parked there since you first got your license does not in fact make it your spot - it just makes it the road in front of your parents house.

He refuses to just respect neighbourhood seniority and common sense (it's in front of my house ffs) and to just go park at the entrance of the block and walk there once a week to get in his car to get his crack. And to make matters worse he's mean muggin'.
I'll say it again, because it bears repeating.

I think the point is that there's far better things to be concerned about...that, in silly internet meme terms, is a "first world problem". From our standpoint, you sound aggravated by the fellow above what most users indicate..that you're disproportionately upset compared to the severity of the action. You further this by exaggerating with petty name calling and cracks about their physical appearance.

Is he being a dick? Probably. There's logical intuitive sense in thinking that everybody should be entitled to the space in front of their house and by taking it, you probably know you're doing something that's a bit harsh. But is it really worth getting (what sounds like from my point of view) so concerned about it? Probably not.

I would suggest at least attempting to reason with them though. Although Sliver thinks otherwise, I feel that talk doesn't hurt. It's just 10 minutes of your life. Knock on their door and just ask if they can move their car. If, and that's an if, calm rational talk doesn't work, then you can consider calling up bylaw officers on the technicality. It'll aggravate your dispute, but the call in this sense is ultimately yours.

In my mind though, it's a mountain out of a molehill. It isn't worth it I think to get worked up about someone parking in front of my house and forcing me to walk a few minutes to my car everyday, even as an unwritten rule.

EDIT - Also, I'm a little confused on the "neighbourhood seniority" concept. Is it another unwritten rule?

You can call CPA and they may come tag the car with a "72 hours to move" tag. Or they might not.

If they don't, that's about all you can do. Next time you buy a house perhaps you'll think about ample parking for all of your vehicles on your property.

I actually have a somewhat productive suggestion that may or may not work, if calling CPA and talking to your neighbours doesn't help.

When he moves his car, place your black and blue garbage & recycling bins in the spot. Leave them there, and move them out of the way when you want to park. When you are leaving, back up a little bit, put the bins back, and drive away.

When he comes back from grabbing nachos or doritos from 7-eleven or whatever he does in the mornings, your bins will be out and he is probably too stupid to realize it isn't garbage day, so he'll just find another place to park. It's not likely he'll move the bins for you.

You can get a ticket for leaving your bins out on non-garbage days, but people are pretty unlikely to call by-law on you if the bins are in front of your own house and not causing an eyesore. There is some risk to it, and you look like a goofball having your bins out all week.

Or - Just park in front of your own driveway.

My interpretation of that rule is that you have 2 hours that you may be parked in that zone. Moving your car up one space doesn't count as leaving the zone.

But there's nothing saying how long you must be out of the zone before you can re-enter it......

tough one.

Can we combine this thread, Bad Roommate, and How to deal with horrible inlaws? in to one mega-thread called No Balls: Need Passive Agressive Solutions.

Sure it sucks when someone parks in front of your house, but you do not own that spot. Suck it up. First world problems.

I grew up on a culdesac. The only parking rule was that any cars that were parked on the street near the top part of the loop would have to deal with our street hockey games. That meant you should expect tennis balls, those little orange balls, and the occasional puck designed to be used on cement (those things sucked though) hitting your vehicle. And the occasional kid on rollerblades who couldn't stop in time. People with more than two cars quickly learned to park on the sides of the loop.

I think it needs to be asked. How old are you?

Of course that's ridiculous,
you just pointed out there is a perfectly good parking spot at the entrance.

Also you've made a lot of accusations about this person. How do you know when he spends so much time in house during day that he's not taking online courses?
Or when his vehicle doesn't move for days on end that he's not out of town working?

Clearly you've never spoken to any of them, so I'm really curious how you can know so much just by looking at them.

Unless you're renting and can move easily, don't get your neighbour's car towed. Whether you talked to him or not, it will be pretty obvious who did it. You don't own the street in front of your house and you don't have any rights to it. When you're on a cul-de-sac where there is not as much curb space as a normal street you're going to get more cars per house than curb space, just like in the inner city where people have 2 cars and 25 foot lots. It happens, you just have to deal with it and maybe walk an extra 100 feet most days. It won't kill you, but getting into a war with your neighbours is sheer hell.

If he might be reasonable just talk to him and say you need to park in front of your house, eg. because you need to plug it in when it's cold, so would he mind leaving the space for you.

I have worked DT for over 10 years. I drove for the first four. I used to always park in 2 hour free parking. I'd go out every two hours to check my tires. If it wasn't chalked, I didn't move it. But if it was, I'd move it up or back a foot. Just enough to have the chalk kissing the pavement. I never physically moved my car. Things may have changed now due to new technology, but they may not have.

I live on a corner lot and we have this vehicle parked next to my front door, it has been parked there since early July and it is parked the wrong direction. After talking with my neighbours, no one knows who's car it is. Also the registration is still valid.

Better to call bylaw or the cops?

I would call it in (likely by-law first); the valid plates could be stolen off another vehicle.
