Cree people today definitely associate the name with the Cree word askâwa, which does mean raw meat or eggs. One Cree speaker suggested the original word that became corrupted to Eskimo might have been askamiciw (which means "he eats it raw,") and the Inuit are referred to in some Cree texts as askipiw (which means "eats something raw.")
On the other hand, some linguists have recently suggested that this might be a 'folk etymology'--an origin for a word which, though believed by many speakers of the language, isn't historically true. (An example of folk etymology in English is the word '#####rdly,' which many people incorrectly think is related to the similar-sounding racial slur '######.') The Cree word askimew means "he laces snowshoes," and these linguists believe that may have been the original name the Crees used to refer to their Inuit neighbors.
In any event, regardless of the name's origins, many Inuit people do not like the word "Eskimo" today.

In Swahili white people are called Mzungu and it was used as an insult at one point.
In Thai they call Europeans Farang although I am not sure if it is an insult or more as part of an insult like stupid farang.

In Cree they call the white man moonyass. I'm not sure if it's insulting or not, probably not.
I did some reading and one native says it's because our asses are white like the moon. Great sense of humour the Cree have.
Anyways here's the real deal from another board.

Louis CK on being white (edited for language):
Quote:
Here’s how great it is to be white. I could get in a time machine and go to any time and it would be fataing awesome when I get there. That is exclusively a white privilege. Black people can’t fata with time machines. A black guy and a time machine is like: “Hey, I think before 1980, no thank you, I don’t wanna go.” But I can go to any time. The year 2, I don’t even know what was happening then, but I know when I get there: “Welcome, we have a table right here for you, sir.” Oh, thank you. Oh, it’s lovely here in the year 2. I can go to any time. In the past. I don’t wanna go in the future and find out what happens to white people because we’re gonna pay hard for this, you gotta know that. We’re not gonna just fall from number 1 to two. They are gonna hold us down and fata us in the butt forever. And we totally deserve it. But for now – WEEEE! Now if you – if your white and you don’t admit that it’s great, you’re an a-hole. It is great. And I’m a man. How many advantages could one person have. I’m a white man. You – you can’t even hurt my feelings. What can you really call a white man that really digs deep: “Hey Cracker.” “Oh ruined my day.” Boy, shouldn’t called me a cracker, bringing me back, owning land and people, what a drag.

I tend to agree, although people are probably much more sensitive in Vancouver with such a high chinese population.
Diverging from the subject a bit, I sense that some young people today tend to consider older people a bunch of bigots because of their past use of language, and I believe this is somewhat unfair. Growing up in Toronto in the 40's and 50's, the overall culture and times were much different. Society was much less mixed racially. Wars were being fought with Asian and some European nations, etc. Children of the day were subjected to the language and usages passed down by their parents, grandparents, peers, etc., part of which, by today's standards, would be considered racist.
For example, when we used the method of choosing things by saying, "eeny meeny miny mo.....", or went down to the store to ask for "nxxxer babies", we weren't aware we were offending Blacks. There were very few Blacks around to offend at the time.
I moved to a small town in my teens, where we all knew the band leader was gay, because he kept winking at us. I believe most of us accepted him for what he was, and were disgusted when some local woman who caught wind of it and wrote a scathing letter in the town newspaper, which got him fired and stripped of his pension.
I think in the old days, most Canadians lived by the Golden rule, "Do unto others..." regardless of a person's skin colour. I remember getting on a bus to go downtown in Vegas during the late 60's. I went right to the back of the bus and noticed everyone was looking at me, including the Blacks who were all around me. Little did I know that only Blacks sat at the back of the bus. The people probably thought, "He's just another one of those dumb Canadians who don't know any better".
Society was changing so fast during the 70's, with regard to being politically correct, that the Archie Bunker series came along to lighten up the issue. We were laughing at him, not with him. He reminded us of some of the older, unenlightened folks at the time.
On a lighter note:
"a little nip in the air" is a Japanese pilot
An Italian airplane crashing goes nnnnnnnnnnnnnnn WOP
Sorry for being so long winded, but I thought it would be a good opportunity to create a little more understanding and tolerance between the young and the old.

I was always taught that the second line was "catch a tiger by his toe". It was a few years ago when I learned that the rhyme had offensive origins.
On a lighter note, my Grandma was in the grocery store a few years ago and overheard an elderly lady ask an employee where they kept the "nxxxer babies". The guy was really shocked and confused and my Grandma had to pull her aside and tell her that they aren't called that anymore.

At least the logo is a cartoon and the name is less offensive. Redskins wins hands down.

I used to have a buddy in high school who was French from Quebec... and of course everybody back then called the French frogs.
He said the French called us English, squareheads. I never could figure out why and it seemed like a stupid thing to call us... not on par at all with frog.
But now that I think of it, maybe he meant blockhead..

They are a black licorice in the shape of a person, or at least a nickname for the product, I don't know if it ever sold under that name.
Apparently quite popular with old people.

Pretty sure they were as I remember seeing them in stores as a little guy and there's no way I would have picked up that term with my family.

I wonder if we may be talking about a time difference. I'm talking about the 40's and 50's. That's what the store owner called them, so that's what we asked for.
With regard to the "eeny meany miny mo..." I do know when it got to my kids they used "catch a tiger by the toe...", so perhaps the candies had been renamed also by that time.
