I'm another one who leaves them out for the homeless. I'd like to claim it's because I'm a nice guy, but it's actually mostly because I'm too lazy to go to the bottle depot for a few measly bucks.
A few measly bucks? I've never left the bottle depot with less than $20 in my hand.
Obviously your definition of measly is different than mine.
I remember in my second year of university living in a house with three other guys. We essentially had party to some degree nearly every weekend and during downtime one of us was almost always casually drinking. Needless to say we produced a lot of empties.
I'll never forget rolling up to the bottle depot after 4 months of saving up are empties. We filled an entire truck bed full, and when there was still more we had to borrow a small trailer from one of our parents to haul in the rest. We had 4 counters working for about an hour straight just on us.
Walked out of that bottle depot with a cool $300 cash, and proceed to spend nearly all of it on more beer. Felt good man.
Location: In a land without pants, or war, or want. But mostly we care about the pants.

Say it takes me an hour to gather all my bottles, put them in the car, drive to the depot, fight my way past the bums, get my cash, and then get back home, which sounds about right. $20 is definitely not enough incentive for an hour of my time.
This is also why I have my dress shirts laundered and ironed rather than doing it myself. Some things are just not worth doing for yourself when you think about time spent vs value.

Eh my wife takes em to the depot once in a while and gives the money to her roller derby league. If it were up to me I'd leave em out for the bottle pickers. Personally my storage space/time is worth more than the bit of cash I can get by taking them in.
A trip to the Bottle Depot ends up with a free Chinese dinner for the family. Why would I pass up some excellent Ginger Beef, Almond Gai Ding, Singapore Noodles and Beef with Snowpeas in Oyster Sauce? Hmmm I'm hungry --Is is lunch time yet? Might have to head off to Dim Sum.

Your wife is in a roller derby league? For real? That is awesome.

I'm surprised you can still eat after being in close contact with all us smelly bums that go there.
I have to admit I've never been a big bottle depot guy (always give my stuff to bottle drives) but my kids drink a lot of milk and the 4L jugs bring back $0.25 each. I end up brining garbage bags of the 4L jugs and pocket enough to take the family to Smashburger.
