While definitely the idea location, I don't want the Stampede to have anything to do with it for the sole reason that I'd rather it not look like some cowboy-themed brick barn.

Last I heard, it's down to two sites... with the Flames being intrigued by the west downtown location quite a lot.

GM place in Vancouver seems to be nestled between two overpasses, so perhaps the Flames were looking at it as a way of doing things.

Completely agree. When comparing it to the brand new pru center in New Jersey, sure the line ups are way shorter, but you feel like your a mile away from the ice, in the upper deck, and the ceiling is so high that it feels like your in a massive warehouse where noise and atmosphere gets sucked away.

Having been to both, I also agree. But wow, Nassau is just bad otherwise.
I'd hope if they're building a new rink they do it closer to Pittsburgh, Phoenix or Minnesota. The sightlines in those rinks are very good.

Beer selection! I wouldn't be surprised if they had the most selection in the entire league.

They'd better, given the state of the team in recent history.

I actually kind of like Nassau because it is so small and intimate. It feels like an old-timey community rink, not a super polished corporate sports complex like a lot of them do these days. Tickets were dirt cheap too, so it was mostly families even in the lower bowls, as opposed to your usual high-roller or corporate tickets crowd.

20 minutes away from where? The airport?

If they put it in Airdrie, I don't see how people in the SW will go to many games. It'd take me a hour + to get there and I'm at the very north part of the SW and really that is ridiculous to spend 5 hours to go to a game unless you're going maybe 5 times a year.

Ottawa is the cautionary tale of building an arena in the middle of nowhere (Airdrie).
Worst arena by far in Canada.

I would love for them to stay on the grounds. I know there was alot of talk of taking down the big four building which I think would be ideal as you could intergrate the Victoria station (which I think needs to be expanded for four cars) into the arena (I think weadickville would also need to be moved).
I also don't mind the a little municpal money being thrown in because for every major concert that forgoes Calgary because of the current dome, playing here would infuse a boat of cash to the city if they decided to play here. I think the governemnt would make their money back pretty quick.

I believe that the flames were close to making a final decisions with the details of the arena. Then the Stampeders purchase completly changes their scope and goals with this project. It is the right decision to take a very good look into this double stadium. It will be very challenging to put this all together, but worth it in the end!

The area north of 11th Ave is currently just a big open lot, and would be big enough for just an arena and some bars and restaurants. The blocks between 11th and 12th have some houses and businesses on them, but they would likely be available for re-development. There was a planned condo tower for the corner of 4th St and 12th Ave, but it was cancelled a few years ago.
This location would need some significant transportation infrastructure work to be able to move people in and out of the area efficiently. It would likely help spur development in the East Village because City Hall would be the closest C-Train station to the complex (slightly closer than Victoria Park), so there would be large numbers of people walking through the East Village before and after every event.
|
There will be a station on the southeast LRT line at 10th Avenue and 4th Street East, basically right outside your building footprints. You could also push the potential area east to include the Victoria Park Transit Centre, for which there has been much talk of replacing it and redeveloping the land for years.
Also, the Firepark site has major contamination issues as well.
