I thought this was common knowledge. If Antarctica was a country it would be the 2nd largest. It does have a country code.

Your handle on what people are like in different states is impressive for a 16 year old and you seem to mention your age alot. Just seems odd.

It must be from all that sex he's been having with 39 year old women.

Nah, it was the fact your first week you mentioned your page a plethora of times. The 96 could have meant you were a fan of Pavel Bure for two years?

Honestly though, after that you've shown to be a good poster and anyone who is still on your ass for that needs to let up.

You're a good poster Sask, who cares that you're 16 or whatever. It doesn't matter your age, but rather what you contribute, and your contributions have been decent.

I'd say that 9.5 times out of 10, Americans I encounter have heard of Calgary and know where it is.

In the 70's and 80's, that was definitely not the case. Canada was definitely not on the radar then and certainly not western Canada.

On the other hand, in a rural part of Georgia a couple of years ago, in discussing something with an obviously prosperous and intelligent business lady, she asked if I knew someone named Bob in Toronto, even after I'd said "Calgary." Lady, one is a city of five million, the other is a city of one million and they're about 2,000 miles apart. That's like asking someone from Los Angeles if they know Bob in New York. That was funny somehow, someway.

I was in Kerrville, Texas a couple of years ago standing around when a middle aged fellow meandered nearby real friendly and asked me some question about the local university basketball team. Basically a surefire conversation starter in that part of the world. My blank face and clear lack of enthusiasm for the subject material followed by a shrugged shoulders and statement "Don't really know. Don't follow US college sports. I'm from Calgary" caused his face to go into instant confusion followed by distaste. I think he hastily left because he was pretty sure I was gay from that moment on. Also, I didn't feel threatened and didn't wish I was packing heat to deter his unwelcome question.

Cowperson
I'd say more people I run into here know where Calgary is versus people in Calgary knowing where Richmond is and they are similarly sized cities.

"What are these guys in the big suits doing?"

A member of the crew said they were practicing for their trip to the moon. The old man got all excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts.

Recognizing a promotional opportunity, the NASA folks found a tape recorder. After the old man recorded his message, they asked his son to translate it. He refused. The NASA PR people brought the tape to the reservation, where the rest of the tribe listened and laughed, but they refused to translate the elder's message to the moon.

Finally, the NASA crew called in an official government translator. His translation of the old man's message was "Watch out for these guys; they have come to steal your land."

WRONG!!!!! First off convicted felons can not legally purchase firearms. Secondly a lot of states do not allow you to own fully automatic weapons. The ones that do require a more stringent screening process and a tax on top of it to obtain a fully automatic weapon. However a semi automatic rifle or handgun can be obtained in 20 mins by filling out paperwork and having the seller call in for a background check.

That being said.. I'm American and I'm proud to be one. I dont deny that we have problems. We have lots but I also still think this is a great country to live in. I dont know why Canadians have such a problem with Americans. I really dont see that much of a difference between us. I could easily move to Calgary and not really have to much of a culture or system shock. The only differences would be its a lot colder there in the winter, poutine, more hockey and...... you guys cant win as many medals in the Summer olympics..

So some are pissed that some ignorant anus doesn't know where Calgary is? I bet if you asked them if they knew where, lets say Harrisburg, Lubbock, Ft. Myers are a lot of Canadians wouldn't know. I'm sure I can go to any canadian city and find a large amount of Dolts too. It's not like Canada is full of brilliant people just like the US isn't full of complete idiots. We're at 85% of complete of being full on idiots we have some more room for them, you just have to cross on the southern boarder.

Sorry for the long post but trying to help Sowa understand the hate:

I straddle the border and live and work in Seattle/Vancouver. As well, I've lived in NYC and 5 different provinces while travelling around the States on vacation and business since the 90's. From my experience, I would say most Americans have a neutral to a positive attitude towards Canadians.

They find Canadians to be friendly, nice and very similiar to Americans if they know anything at all. Usually it is a conversation killer because they don't know much about the country. There is a perception that we speak French and English equally well..haha..and liberals love our healthcare while conservatives don't. They ask about the high taxes and more recently the oilsands.

Posters like Montana Moe and Sowa are typical American in that they don't understand that Anti Americanism is part of the Canadian national identity. In fact, it is the very definition of Canadianism unfortunately that goes back to the Revolutionary war.

The irony of course is how Canadians love American culture via the internet, movies, tv, music, shopping, American products and prices. Canadians are and have been economically dependent on the the States since Confederation even to the extent that trade between the provinces and the US is easier than interprovincial trade because of artificially created provincial tariffs.

Canadians compare themselves on every level to America that borders on paranoia like daily local news updates on how the loonie is doing versus the greenback. You don't see that in the States even in border towns.

I think Americans would be shocked and confused how disliked they are by their closest relatives since we are so similar. A typical American see Canadians in the same view as a New Yorker would see a Washingtonian...American in all but name. Certainly differently than the perception towards Europeans or Mexicans.

Canadians OTOH essentially have a built in envy and an inferiority complex that is manifested by a need to point out how bad and stupid Americans are at any opportunity to compensate.
