Integration? Sure. But that doesn't need to mean Facebook sign-in. In fact, that's the antithesis of Whatsapp. Koum built Whatsapp's user base on offering as much anonymity as you could possibly afford a messaging service. Force a Facebook sign-in and now you've got... Facebook Messenger. But why? They can't monetize single sign on.

Facebook's not acquiring these companies to grow their social network. They're buying these companies because they want to go toe-to-toe with Google. They own the world's largest photo-sharing service, the world's largest (?) messaging service, and the world's largest social network. They don't have to all be on their social network for them to profit from them.

I don't even have a facebook account, I doubt they'd force it on the system as they completely cut out that potential group of customers.

Was Oculus Rift really worth $2 Billion or do they just throw a ton of money for the "WOW" factor. Anyways hopefully this gets Valve to consider revive their own virtual reality headset they were working on.

Flipping a kickstarter fueled product for insane money was bound to happen eventually, but that doesn't make it less scummy. Facebook is annoying.

Cmon Valve, you could have saved us!! Heck I'd have even been ok with Microsoft buying it over Facebook.

Valve doesn't want it. Valve was already making their on VR headset.

Oculus will fall to the wayside as the innovator who couldn't hold onto the market as facebook free competition and advancements start to come in.

Raph Koster has an interesting take:

http://www.raphkoster.com/2014/03/25...e-oculus-sale/

Never thought about it that way, but I kind of like the ideas, and makes a bit more sense as to why Facebook of all companies would do this.

Carmack had an interesting tweet too:

"I have a deep respect for the technical scale that FB operates at. The cyberspace we want for VR will be at this scale."

Which is kind of along the same lines, Oculus Rift as the de facto virtual world that everyone uses to interact with each other. In that light the acquisition makes more sense.

I'd be mad too if I tossed in money and was sold a false bill of goods. A company that spiders its way into your life and sells ads based on information it gathers on you isn't a great company to be buying everything.

You weren't sold anything. Kickstarter is for donations.

I wasn't sold anything either way, I didn't donate. I just understand why people would be pissed since they donated based on an idea for this product which was sold out as soon as possible. They created it, it's their right, but I understand the anger.

And those people all received dev kits, and the Oculus Rift is still going to come out. In fact, it will likely come out faster now.

The nerd rage baffles me.

Facebook is insidious. I think of FB as "them" in this exchange:

Captain James T. Kirk: They're animals.
Captain Spock: Jim, there is an historic opportunity here.
Captain James T. Kirk: Don't believe them. Don't trust them.
Captain Spock: They're dying.
Captain James T. Kirk: Let them die!

And that is why I would never donate anything to a kickstarter project. You're basically donating money to someone who hopes to eventually turn that money into a profit for themselves. Why would I help fund someone else's investment?

I like how many people think of themselves as Investors for donating money on Kickstarter, and are outraged by this. If you want a say in how a company operates, kicking in a couple dollars on kickstarter isn't that way to go about it.

This is funny to watch.
