A cheap steak IMO is like $10-20.
What I'd consider standard would be $25-40.

Once you get wine into it it's over.
Standard for me drinks not included would be ~$40 per person. EDIT: Incl. tip and tax, maybe a side or shared appy.

So when someone says a place is expensive that all depends. $45? $60? $75? $100? And I mean just the entree. Counting drinks is silly because that throws everything out of whack.
|
Steaks at Vintage run between $35-45 (IIRC) depending on cut, with one side dish included. When my wife and I go there, we spend about $80-100/person for appetizers, mains, desserts, drinks, and tip. That's probably expensive to some, but it's pretty standard for fine dining in Calgary.

Unfortunately, it's hard to even have burgers and fries for under 10 bucks these days, so for even a basic steak you're definitely looking in the high 20's or 30's to start off with.

Just because you don't like something, doesn't mean others shouldn't either. It's called taste for a reason.
For me, it's the buttery taste of foie gras compined with a perfect tenderloin, with a good puff pastry. I happen to like it.
|
I love Beef Wellington. There's a lot of work involved in making the sauce. I wanted to make it once, but the sauce defeated me.
I agree, a medium rare steak with a nice puff pastry.. mmmm.

And it's really $100 well spent every month or two.
While steaks there generally run 35-45, it's necessarily dining experience in this city to go there with one other person and split a cowboy chop (which IIRC is 78 bucks).

YMMV. I actually like the keg as a "casual dining" type restaurant, but it's less consistent than a truly great steakhouse would be.
|
Yup, we have some friends where The Keg is kind of a thing, and the Macleod Trail one is the only one we go to now, they either do a good job or will make it right. Once they even paid for dry cleaning for my wife's coat when someone from another table spilled wine on it.

The best Steak Sandwich I have ever had in my life was at Stonehill Tavern. It was one of the most tender steaks I have gotten anywhere, and it was the "low grade" steak sandwich. Reasonably priced too, and great service.

Yeah but you didn't specify any particular restaurant. I'm talking about people saying "go here but it's expensive".
Well to some people that could mean $75 entree or $40 entree. Big difference.

$100 for apps, mains, desserts, drinks and tip is actually not bad. If I could get what people are describing as the best steak in Calgary for $45 I'd consider it a great deal.
Hell go to Earls and their steak is about $30-35.

Well I didn't say under $10, I said $10-20 but you're right.
But it depends on what you mean basic steak. I said $10-20 for a cheap steak because you can go out and get a cheap steak/steak sandwhich at a pub or cheap restaurant.
However I'd consider your typical restaurant like Earls, Keg, even BPs or Montanas to have steak around $25-35. Usually with an option for a steak sandwhich for under or around $20.

i sometimes wonder why i got out for steak - it is easy to cook at home (if you have a bbq), the the price at the retuarnat is what 5 or 6 times the price of the ingredieants from the store - and the price of pop at a restaurant is more than the superstore liquor store - and at home you can have the whole bottle of ranch if you want......

The problem is if you want the same quality of cut, it's pretty hard to find if you're just the average consumer. The best cuts (ie Prime) get snapped up by restaurant industry. Even if you do find one at a butcher, you're definitely not going to be paying Superstore prices.

Yeah, I don't think I've ever seen "Prime" at a regular grocery store, although Costco has meat labelled "Canada Prime" sometimes. For those curious:

Just wondering what the best steak place would be in Calgary... and nothing too high-priced. Preferably in a "normal" steak price range.
I live in the South as well, so the closer the better.
Anyone try the Chop Steakhouse by Chinook?
|
A lot of people here are recommending fairly expensive restaurants.... which is fine if you have a lot of coin to spend on a high end steak house restaurant...
but folks ... this is a family dinner and I doubt they want to be paying on average (including drinks) $60 - $80 per person.
I say again... for a family dinner you can't beat Mr Schnapps in Shawnessy SE. Reasonably priced, great tasting food, good selection of differnent types of food, nice decor.

If you want a good steak, it's hard to find cheap. Those are the "normal" steak range prices these days. If the Keg isn't considered normal, I'm not sure what is.
If price is the driving factor, maybe this family dinner shouldn't be at a steak house to begin with. You can have fantastic meals for a lot less than what a steak will cost you.

I agree. A steak is a premium item at any restaurant. Quite frankly, if I had kids, I wouldn't waste a $50 steak on them. I might take a teenager to the Keg on a special occassion, but anything else is a total waste and will not be appreciated.
I'd be hesistant to take a date to a high end steak place, unless I knew they were comfortable with their steak medium rare or rarer.

One of the cardinal rules of eating steak is let it rest before tucking in. How can you let the meat rest when the plates are super hot?

Anyone know how the steak at the Calgary Tower restaurant is?
Cattle Baron and Ceasars are my favoritete steak places but I did have an amazing, possibly top 3 all time, steak at the Palliser.

A great question for Ruth's Chris, they seem to boast about the super hot plates for some reason. I never saw the big deal about it, asides from something that could burn you if you weren't thinking.
