I question that as well. I think a Federal ban on the import would be far more effective.
Also public pressure. If no one is ordering it; it won't be on menu long.

Yuh, not even close.
Veal comes from a regulated industry that deals with one of the most populous mammals on the planet (obviously as a result of that industry). Its not even close to being in the same conversation.

Won't this just create a seedy underground blackmarket in Calgary for Shark Fin, soon to turn Calgary's Chinatown into something out of "Big Trouble In Little China"?
More seriously, whats to stop someone from driving up to Edmonton and bringing back all the shark fin they want?

There will soon be a ban on importing green-eyed Asian women to take care of that specific problem.
Regarding the sharks though, I think the only way it should be considered a status symbol is if you battled with the shark itself and took its fin. Letting some guys in boats thousands of km away deal with it is totally sissy cop-out in my opinion.

I'm in favour of using the whole animal if you're going to do this sort of thing. I happen to like shark-skin watch bands, myself.
But to just slice the fin off and throw it back into the sea, eff that.

Which is why this shark finning is so out of character for the chinese. We use everything! Chicken feet, reindeer antlers, clotted pigs blood, all types of stomachs, bull penises, turtle shells.
I blame the costa ricans! or as we like to call them, the huk gwais!

I blame the rich Chinese who pay a kings ransom for the stuff. Without them, there's no demand.

You are sorely mistaken if you think the rich chinese are the only ones demanding this stuff. The average to middle class chinese will spend half the income to aquire it. All to appear well off. The Chinese are horribly materialistic. It's no different from those that spend their income to aquire a geniune LV bag just to blend with society.

A lot of people who are really upset about shark finning are upset because they think they should be upset. I don't buy Gordon Ramsay's outrage for a second as legitimate and from the heart. Why is it an outrage to cut off the fin of a shark, but not an outrage to cut off the head of a fish? The outrage over the cruelty in bashing the brains out of a fish to kill it? The arguments regarding cruelty are disingenuous, in my opinion.
The waste, and the likelihood that the species will go extinct - that is an issue of REAL importance. Not crocodile tears cause a fish got hurt, and you heard about it. ALL the fish you eat did not want to be eaten, and if you asked them, it would all be cruel.

??? are you joking?
So you cut off the fish's head. It dies. you cut off a shark's fin and you throw it back into the ocean to let it die a slow painful death. I think they drown because the way they get oxygen is by swimming.
So is it better to cut off a chicken's head or to cut off both it's wings and then let it run around still alive?

It's called "empathy". You would really have to be a psychopath to think that it was okay to handicap another living creature and leave them to die.

I've never been much of a fan of Ramsay's shtick but I can definitely get behind him in regards to his efforts to stop finning. That video filled me with disgust. I didn't know anything about this subject before but now I'll at least try to become better informed. One things for sure, I'll never eat that stuff.
