Although yes, the climate in Vancouver (downtown especially) is much worse than Victoria.

I was responding to Vancouver>Calgary. I'm pretty sure Victoria's a different city than Vancouver.

Victoria, home of Butcher's Garden and the most homeless people in Canada. Love that mild weather!

Don't forget all that raw sewage they pump right into the ocean! They are so green over there, we could learn a lot from them...

Might want to check your facts on that. Toronto holds that title with Calgary having the biggest increase year after year since the early 2000's. The only difference is the homeless here can stay outside where places like Calgary have a lot of 'hidden' homeless because of the harsh winters.

Victoria is a beautiful city, but holy crap is it boring.

I was just on Global National with a quick clip on this issue. They came up to me beside a lemonade stand at the stampede this morning.

His opinion, and glad to hear it. In Canada, how dare you proclaim to be the best at something without receiving scorn from somewhere or some group?
While that "best" is always subjective, Harper's not the type to pander to the l.c.d for a cheap pop at the best of times, and this time around and he's not really caring about votes with him likely retiring as opposed to re-elected, nevermind that this was in a casual environment, not an election fundraiser or anything offical. He made a statement from his frame of reference and is thankfully sticking by it.
He shares the opinion of lots that live here, have lived here and have had to move away.
Take the compliment from a long time resident of the city who happens to be the leader of the country, tip of the hat, and move on without trying to talk it down or justify it one positively or negatively.
That said, glad to see the mess of Vancouver mayor's office get hot and bothered. The second that first car got lit up like a Christmas tree in June 2011, there is very little he can justify. I remember an interview with CBC or CTV during the Olympics trying to get Harper to declare Vancouver the best city in some regard, and he never did, so again Harper doesn't just throw these platitudes out like candy.

Stepher Harper is a politician. If on election eve he needs one more seat to ensure a majority, and for fun lets say its in Quebec, and that majority could be ensured by saying "X Riding is the greatest riding in Canada, the greatest country in the world", then he's going to piss off everyone here just to get that vote. As has been pointed out several times, this is no different than a rock band saying "Hey City X! You guys are the best crowd we've ever played against"

Harper not the type to pander? Yeah, right! This is the same Harper who wears Flames silks and is avowed Flames "fan" yet his Calgary born and raised son wears Leafs gear. I suppose he does that to garner the Ontario vote all the while holding his nose.
I was born, raised, educated and a proud (ex)Calgarian and can say that is great city in a lot of ways but it isn't the best.

People are only uncomfortable because they aren't used to it. Our body's thermoregulation system takes time to adjust itself and if this week's temperatures became the norm after a while it wouldn't feel nearly as hot.

I dont really think Calgary is the best city in the country, although it is kind of awesome. I do enjoy the fact that some people in Vancouver are all butt hurt over it though.

Vancouver certainly wins smugest city in Canada in a runaway. Consistently being told your city is on of the best in the world (if you excluded a portion of it) certainly adds to that.

Ok CPers, little help here. Want to hijack another poll on Kelowna's Castanet about Harper calling Calgary the best city!
http://www.castanet.net/edition/news...-11-.htm#77852
This should take you right to the polling page but if not its easy to find from the main page!
Thanks in advance!

Looks like that Harper fella may be onto something.

Calgarians report having the best quality of life of Canada’s four largest cities, according to an Angus Reid public opinion poll released on Friday.
The poll indicates that residents of Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal are mostly content with their quality of life, but still have concerns. Calgarians reported the highest satisfaction in quality of life, at 87 per cent, followed by Vancouver (82 per cent), Toronto (80 per cent) and Montreal (75 per cent).

An even truer statement would be
Rob Anders: Calgary is the greatest city, in the greatest country in the world.

This really made me go WTF?? So every child born in Calgary must be a Flames fan or their parents have somehow failed???
Perhaps he raised his son to think for himself and make his own choices when it comes to teams he supports. And really ones sons' or daughter's taste in sports or anything else has zero to do with a politicians political motivations.

Um Pretty sure both Harper and his son are Leaf fans.
Edit: yep, from his Wikipedia.
An avid follower of ice hockey, he has been a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs since his childhood in the Leaside and Etobicoke communities in Toronto.
