I'll check with Gateway, but I'm not sure she's sold (or even myself) on Windows 8...based on what we've seen.

We're moving from XP to Windows 7 (myself in the last 6 month) and we both really like it.
Get the upgrade anyway, so you can save some cash later on if you want it, but you don't need to upgrade it right away. If you do want to try it, you can always revert to Windows 7 if you really don't like it.

I'm not a fan of the UI, at all. You know what would be cool? A 3D UI where you could rotate the screen to look different ways; programs you used more looked physically bigger, or brighter, and were closer to the centre locale; where your files were in "worlds" which would be dynamically created by metadata tagged on the files and automatically created by their content; where your webcam would be used to follow your eye movements instead of using a mouse; etc. If you're going to redesign things, think a little bigger than a reimagination of a touch screen.

Gabe Newell of Valve fame says Windows 8 is a "catastrophe"

Well, he eludes to the fact that it will be less "open". But, honestly, isn't that the direction that the entire industry is moving? I think Apple has proven that this is what average Joe consumer really wants (and pays for) and MS is just following suit.

IMO, it's bunk because the PC side still looks to be fairly open to allowing users to install whatever they want. Just RT is getting locked down, which makes a ton of sense. Maybe Newell foresees the death of Steam in a few years if things keep going this way? I dunno.

90 day trial version of RTM is available:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/eval.../jj554510.aspx

Can't upgrade the trail version to the full version though.

How is this in any way relevant to Windows 8?

For MS enterprise customers with Software Assurance, the full version complete with keys is in your licensing portal today. The IT office here is at a standstill while we upgrade

Does someone really have to explain to you why directly comparing the iOS (with 1 whole new phone every year - at three price points) marketshare with Android's (100 new phones a year each targeting COMPLETELY different consumers) is a very misleading stat and easy to misuse?

I don't know, I think it's a great stat. Without fail, whenever someone posts it, an Apple user will get angry about it. It's fun to watch!

It's not just Apple users that get mad. It's also the people who enjoy the Tech Talk forum on CP and are interested in things other than iOS vs. Android.

I think anyone who understands statistics gets angry about it, because it is meaningless given like it always is.

If you broke it down by OS version, then it would have a ton more meaning. Since it would point out the Phones running 4+ year old software.

Didn't do an awful lot of pre-install research, but I fired Windows 8 up on a freshly built desktop and was stunned that it doesn't support DVD/Bluray movie playback.

Outside of that, I find the desktop/metro experience to be extremely jarring and not very intuitive whatsoever. It's as if it's trying to trick itself into thinking that by being minimalist it's simplifying things when all it's doing is hiding necessities.

Anyone planning to upgrade tonight/tomorrow? Gonna go camp out for Windows 8?

I'm waiting to get a new SSD and run them parallel until I can validate my development environments and processes on Windows 8, but the SSD I want (Samsung 840 Pro) isn't really available yet.

Valve is just mad because it will hurt their business, of course they won't applaud that.

Microsoft gets hated on for doing something apple did a long time ago..

Then he finishes it off by pushing Linux on us, seriously? 98% of the internet doesn't code and doesn't want to deal with bugs. Why would they be interested with Linux?

So I'm thinking of upgrading, but I'm confused. Steam won't run on Win 8?
