That is kind of funny, considering his profession.

I'm not a criminal attorney, and I'm in a different country, so maybe it's an issue of different laws and a lack of expertise on my part. I just think there's a pretty solid case to be made for that statement to be seen as a threat, especially if there are other ominous sounding aspects of the emails (not sure if that's the case or not).

Either go to the cops or go to a lawyer and pursue the termination claim, cost should not be an issue as there are many options available.
I'm curious as to what you mean by this part. If you wouldn't mind expanding, it would be appreciated.

There are likely some legal clinics that could help, either through a law school or another organization (bar organizations, consumer assistance groups etc.). There's likely an income threshold to qualify for assistance there (at least long term help) but either way they should be able to give you a bit of advice.

The other option is a contingent fee setup, although I don't know how that works in Alberta. If it's allowed as I know it to work you'd be paying your attorney a percentage of your recovery, so no need to pay up front.

You should find a brick and paint "The end of the world as you know it..." on it and chuck that brick through the biggest window of the salon.

Update:

After going to the police after the last email, they were really apprehensive to help me out at all. Then by the luck of god, I received another message outlining a cash settlement in exchange for not testifying.

I guess the cops don't like it when you try to extort someone.

So, they've done some searching and found out that the emails were coming from the Owners of the salon. Now, they've been charged with uttering threats and another one similar to extortion, but a lesser version of it.

Thanks everyone for the advice.

Might as well name the salon since it'll be a matter of public record in short order. At least we can opt not to deal with such disreputable folk.

This will bode well for your girlfriend`s wrongful dismissal case.

After talking to her lawyer, for the amount of money she was asking for, pursuing the case would be pointless. This was about the emails and not about her case.

A back alley window, a brick, and a well-placed garden hose at 11:00pm, six months from now should about do it.

Is it just me or are those 'threats' hilarious?

Are you sure this isn't just a cover up story for something that happened in world of warcraft?

On the subject of harassing email from a hotmail account, where can one hire a hacker if one wanted to hire a hacker? Apologies if this was dealt with earlier in the thread.

I bet a Kijiji add would do the trick.

What do you mean by hacker?

I doubt hiring someone on Kijiji to do something illegal is a very good idea, but I could be wrong.
