Yeah really disappointed to see Andy Serkis get snubbed. He honestly should have been nominated for Gollum too. No actor goes through what that guy goes through when he's doing something like that. Its time for these animated characters to start to get recognition IMO. It's not just a voice over anymore. I thought that Serkis might have changed that this year..
That's part of the problem IMO. the academy thinks characters like Gollum are animated in the traditional, Pixar/Disney sense, when in fact they are not. Gollum is 100% performance driven, what you see him do is what Serkis is doing. Same in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and quite a few other characters he has done. In fact his performance in 'Apes is absolutely brilliant, but the Academy is too dumb to recognize it.
Honestly I have never wanted to watch the Oscars less.

I would say that it is brilliant compared to other actors in the same category as Serkis. I mean, sure, if you are comparing him to Max Headroom, yeah he's pretty good. I don't think it stands out though compared to any other performances. Just because he wore special tags that allow him to "control" a CGI character isn't a reason, in my opinion to award him an Oscar.
He was easily the best person who could have taken on the roles of Gollum and Caesar though.

Oscar has no respect for this type of acting, or comedic acting. Ex. How many "actors" could pull off what Mike Myers did in Austin Powers, playing 4-5 distinct characters? I'm serious. That is serious talent.

Eddie Murphy was soooo robbed by the Academy in '96.

Totally agree. It would be nice if the Academy would at the very least recognize some comedic roles and throw a nomination their way. I like Moneyball, I liked Pitt in Moneyball, but there's a number of guys who could have been as good as he was in it. Him getting a nomination was silly.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again and I don't care how stupid it sounds, Jim Carey should have won an Oscar for Liar Liar. No other actor on Earth could have done what he did in that movie. No one. He was over the top, he was hilarious, he was perfect for that role.

Academy voting member #4 is that you? What Serkis is doing is acting in its purest form, and even more impressive is he is not even playing a human character. Anyone can do that with varying degrees of success, but stepping outside of your species and doing it convincingly takes absolute dedication, and incredible talent. Can you see George Clooney doing this?
Now Clooney is a good actor in his own right, I enjoy his work but he could never, ever do what Serkis does, he simply does not have the skill or ability. Serkis deserves an Oscar hands down IMO, but I highly doubt he will ever be nominated.

To be fair, I have a hard time seeing Serkis do what Clooney did in the Descendants.
I agree though, Serkis was amazing and I'd love to see him get some more recognition.

I totally agree with you, although I think Serkis could at least attempt it, Clooney could not be Caesar. But that's my point, Serkis deserves at least consideration for what he does.
Just to add more praise to Serkis, for one of his movies (I forget the title), his character was supposedly half disabled on one side of his body (or something like that) so what Serkis did was train one half of his body for months to make it strong and weakened the other side. The end result was a built side and one weak side. There are no one crazier in the industry than him and Christian Bale.

Oh yeah, I'd say if Serkis did for Gollum what Bale did for "The Machinist", that would have been amazing.
I've seen every movie but two now (The Help and The Artist) from the Best Picture category, and Drive is still my favourite movie of the year. The Tree of Life is a pretty crazy film, and not sure what to make of it. It seems like War Horse and Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close were just thrown in to fill up the 10. I think they should go back only nominating 5.
Too bad the song "Nightcall" wasn't written exclusively for Drive- you'd think it would be a no brainer for best song
Midnight in Paris was fine but not great (Owen Wilson being Owen Wilson in another movie).
Moneyball was fine but not great (Brad Pitt being Brad Pitt in another movie... Jonah Hill being pretty much Jonah Hill in another movie... Philip Seymour Hoffman gave the best performance in the movie as Art Howe).
Tree of Life was the most visually stunning pretentious piece of self indulgent crap I've ever seen.
Ides of Mach was fine but not great (George Clooney being George Clooney in another movie (haven't seen The Descendants, though)).
FWIW, Crazy, Stupid, Love was the most entertaining movie I saw "this year" (and, yes, it had Steve Carell being Steve Carell in another movie), though I plan on watching Drive and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil this weekend, so things could change.
