Looks the public opinion really doesnt matter. Nobody wants a lame walkway! The best part about Jasper national park is that its less developed IMO. Thats the attraction. So now we have to pay admission, which goes directly to Brewster (a private company), to view OUR OWN Canadian wilderness. Sad really.

I think this is a case where the opposition to the walk really helped those in favour of the walk.

The opposition was throwing around so much hyperbole that even if people weren't in favour of the walk they didn't want to be associated with the crazies. A reasonable opposition probably would have been much more effective.

That's a pretty bold statement. Do you have anything at all to back up your claim that "public opinion really doesn't matter"?

Looks to me like a completely ridiculous petition was given the attention it deserved.

I do agree that part of Jasper's charm is that it's less developed. However, it does make sense that if you use the services of a private company, you'll have to pay for it, just like you would for any restaurant in Jasper. I do imagine though that part of the admission from the Walkway will go towards the National Park, as the point is that Parks Canada is looking to increase their revenue through private partnerships

Also, everyone can still enjoy and view our Canadian wilderness free of charge (not counting the parks admission)

Bumping this for an update, construction has been underway this summer and if everything goes as planned it could be opened by mid-summer 2013:
