I grew up and went to school in Forest Lawn in the late 80's and it was relatively safe for a 13 year old back then, I went back after 20 some years this past September and while it hasn't changed structurally much it does feel more ominous.

Had an idea!

Spending money on creating activities for kids to do while they grow up is beneficial in the long run as we don't have to spend MORE down the road keeping them from committing a crime, or after they DO create a crime, putting them in jail at $50,000/year.
The US spends $60 billion on inmates in prison every year. Imagine what $60 billion could by in terms of preventive crime measures in the form of recreational centers, etc, etc.

I grew up in Rundle, and while it's not the best area in the city I much prefer it to the sanitized cookie cutter garbage of the new developments. The funny part is that the d-bag attitudes in this thread are pretty much the number one reason why I despise so many of the people I encounter whenever I'm in Calgary.
And yes, I get that most of you are just joking. I'm talking about the few who aren't.

I'm 19 and have lived my entire life in Temple. I've only had my car stolen twice and been shot at once. They say I'm one of the lucky ones.
On a serious note, we once had a guy and his mom come and look at a car we had posted for sale and the mom was too afraid to get out of her own car. What do people think goes on here? The cul-de-sac I live in is pretty normal and really just consists of a few older families that have been here for ages, a couple younger families with kids, a friendly elderly couple, and the stereotypical white trash family.

The point isn't to rag on the NE, but what the hell is wrong with this one area that seems to be in the news a lot, for very random violent crimes. I could understand if it was all murders or grow ops, but it ranges from murders to child abuse to crazed dogs and their idiot owner. How can one community have such an eclectic assortment of violent crimes occurring there?

I just moved out of Whitehorn a year ago after raising 3 kids in there for 6 years. There are some shady areas in Whitehorn, just like Temple, but I really like the neighbourhood for the most part. I had 7 full grown trees on my lot, and the neighbourhood was loaded with beautiful mature trees as well. The NE obviously gets a bad rap, but I didn't mind. It was cheap to buy a house there and the area I lived in was beautiful and perfect for raising kids.

If you aint from the NE you aint $hit...don't let me catch any of you whiny bitches up here or bust caps in all your asses.
Temple isn't that bad, just a bad string of crimes. Falconridge is the real ####hole. Everyone knows that.

I grew up in Temple. It was a good community to grow up in, but people didn't take care of it, so it's more run down then it should be. I don't go back, but that's only because everyone I knew when I grew up moved out to Skyview Ranch or New Brighton, so I have no reason to.
Plus, Castleridge is the real ####e hole.

i remember growing up in CGY and always thought the NE was just a nasty place compared to other areas of the city on average.
It seems to have just continued on in a downward trend, though the same could be said of all areas of the city over the last several years (i remember a guy getting shot right around my mom's place, in a relatively safe neighbourhood in the SE -> think mackenzie/douglasdale area). Of course, with the NE starting off being more unsafe, that trajectory doesn't bode well for the area.

I moved to Calgary 10 years ago and decided to live in Pineridge because it was close to work. At the time I thought "Calgary has a lot of police helicopters" because for much of the night, every night, it was circling the leisure centre....

I have never felt un-safe in these communities? There is a diverse cultural landscape now moving into these area's due to affordability and access to such things as Transit, even ethnic churches/mosques has played apart. Due to barriers within cultures/language etc. it is harder for these community planners to gain a community pride feeling growing throughout each of these communities. The biggest killer for any community in my oppinion is rental properties. You have much greater turn-over and over crowding of individual homes occurs quite frequently as well. This Temple thing is just a string of bad luck.
