As a student who works for a non-profit organization, I most certainly do not make 90k a year.

I don't make 90K and I am at the end of my 20s in a year or two.
I'm Asian and rebelled against being an accountant/engineer/doctor and wanted to a musician/artist instead for many years so I only have myself to blame.

I am a 28 year old U of C Deans List (the one where he suggests you try some time at another school) Den Alumni and SAIT grad and I pull in 6 figures. 90k is definitely feasible for a 30 year old 12 years from now.

Nothing wrong with a career in music! I bet most people would love to do something like that instead of sitting in an office if they could make it work. I know I would up and go in a hot minute if that was the case.

I definitely don't think there's anything wrong with doing what you enjoy. If it makes you feel any better, I'm sure my job is a helluva lot less interesting than yours.

Well after the mid 20s, I realized that money is important for...living so I'm getting as many certifications as I can in the next 2 years and trying to start business networking pretty late. May be able to break 90K in the early to mid 30s if I work hard but I still believe adamantly that money can't buy happiness.
90K of it would definitely help pay for the search though.

The average is definitely below $90K even in O&G. Even take away the age criteria, people in O&G don't AVERAGE $90K. Just look at Monster, what's the percentage of jobs out there pay $90K? It's definitely not 50%.

Well its O&G, which is not out of the ordinary. Plus I imagine you have a accreditation or something to that effect.

I thought this was just an Occupy CP protest. Now you can't make me leave.

Do you ever read threads like this and wonder what it's going to be like when the sunshine, lollipops and rainbows leave Calgary? Man are we lucky to have grown up/be living here. I'd better pay off my house before the whole thing blows up in our faces...

I make nowhere near that, but then, my employer is notorious for underpaying.
Then again, I like what I do.

All the time! That's why I pretend I make what everyone else makes in other labor markets and save/invest the difference, and avoid owning real estate.

There's a reason why so many "actors" in L.A. have to wait tables on the side. Aside from a small percentage, Art/Music sadly doesn't pay (especially in Calgary). I'm sure your job is much better than 3rd rate side jobs I would have to hold to supplement my income if I tried to do my arty side things. I also was a marketing major when I started out at the U of C but I really only liked the creative part (as a graphic artist) and in my last marketing job, I'm terrible at sales and I'm told the big marketing firms here treat their creative talent as disposable and pay even worse.
Anyway, I've switched fields into IT and I know some people making 100K in this industry in their early 30s. My buddy grew up on a farm and has no post secondary but charges $200/hr as a consultant doing what I'm aiming for.
We are pretty lucky living in Calgary (despite the lack of good weather, the lack of culture, the usual knocks against Calgary, etc.) in that money is flowing through industry and if you work hard and break into something that can tap into the O&G network in some way, you have a chance to do well.

I've personally noticed that my view can be heavily skewed by the company I keep. Day-to-day I work with professionals (mainly engineers) and most of my friends are accountants, geologists, engineers, bankers, etc.
That slice of the population is certainly not "average" and I don't keep tabs on the entire population my old highschool classmates. From what I have seen on facebook though, the average from those is certainly not close to six figures.
I also think people are getting a little mixed up with what is possible/feasible and what would be an "average" outcome. For the 90k average, there has to be a lot of people calling dibs on 140K+ given the statistics of how things really pan out in reality.
