This thread makes me a little more keen to see it on person when I go watch the game on the 8th. All in all, very good news for football fans and other users of BC Place. The old bubble was just dead space.
The Whitecaps should still be in Empire though - much better venue for them.

They spent the same amount that the Texans spent on Reliant Stadium that was posted above and it won't be 10% as nice inside, the spikes on the outside look hideous.

Comparing costs with other projects is pretty flawed thinking when the circumstances surrounding them are so different. Labor costs, material costs and a whole host of other factors leave you with incredibly different factors to consider. It may well be a case of over spending, but not because a project somewhere else was cheaper.

^^Stadium is not complete, no foul if you ask me. But it doesn't look good considering we are 4 days away.

Small correction, but it would be the U of C looking to do this, not the Stamps. The University of Calgary owns McMahon Stadium and the land it (and the practice fields and parking lots) occupies. Either way the notion seems to have gone stale.
Calgary's best bet for a new stadium is to bid for and win the right to host an international sporting event. Olympics again, or more realistically (in terms of chances of hosting and that translating into a new stadium), Commonwealth Games or Pan Am Games.

Aww, but then you get that running track in around the field that takes you farther from the field and makes your endzone corners look stupid.

I hated it until last week, but was judging it before completion. Now I think it looks awesome.
Can't wait for the first Whitecaps game there. Stadium aside, it will be so nice to be able to watch a match downtown and not have to trek down to the far edge of East Van.

Scuttlebut is that the steel contractor on the job took a real haircut...I'm not surprised, It was a tricky project due to how they had to work things. Much harder than putting up a building like the Bow for example despite the fact that there isn't anywhere near as much steel. Sometimes it less expensive to build a new project, than try to lipstick a pig so to say.

I've never spent time in BC Place, so I won't comment on the experience of seeing anything there, but as someone who has lived in Vancouver and has enjoyed looking out on the view of downtown many a night I think the new BC Place looks brutal. Having been back in Van a month ago I couldn't believe how ugly it looked. While the building was just unremarkable before, it's ugly now. The spires look like extra bits tacked on in a way that makes me think of a decent, unremarkable car with a huge and really crap spoiler bolted onto the back.
Personally, I think it really takes away from the view of the city.

I don't know. Part of me says it's ugly.
The other parts says, "EVANGELIONS ARE COMING!"

I'm a lot like you
I need someone to love me

officials are admitting the roof on the half-billion-dollar stadium may not be leak-proof by opening day on Friday, when the B.C. Lions are set to take the now-soggy field.

Hey Nineteen
That's 'Retha Franklin
She don't remember
The Queen of Soul
It's hard times befallen
The sole survivors
She thinks I'm crazy
But I'm just growing old
Hey Nineteen
No we got nothing in common
No we can't talk at all

I was once like you are now, and I know that it's not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Ford Field cost $525 million in inflation adjusted 2011 dollars.
University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona cost $496 million in inflation adjusted 2011 dollars.
Seems like they could have just built a new stadium for between 500-600 million.

hahahaha. don't forget they built this in union station, socialist Vancouver. all those stadiums mentioned above would cost $1 billion in Van.

I can't wait.I hope TSN gives us a behind the scenes tour like they did with the Cowboys stadium.
