I started a new position in the company I had been working for, for the last 3 years. I started it back the first week of April. I realized after about 3 months I don like the new job much and my boss is a bit of a self inflated jackass when he's not wiping the water from behind his ears. I thought maybe after a 2 week trip to Europe I would come back recharged and ready to give it hell once I go back. Not the case.

After getting back and working 3 days, my boss called me into his office and asked why I had not reached my sales number for the week, I explained that I know I missed it buy 18% but I was 2 days short in the week, my boss in return asked me is and I quote "would you like your unborn child to think of their father as a loser or someone gives up??" (my wife is expecting in March)

Thats was about the last straw and I did up a letter of resignation and went into the office first thing the next morning. I asked if I could get 2 minutes of his time at which time I told him about giving my notice and gave him my letter. To which he replied "I dont have time for this bulls**t, go home and I will call you later this week"

As I was walking out of the building I was called back into his office at which time both sales managers decided to talk to me like I was there 5 year old child. Telling me how stupid I was for doing this, how "bush league" it is for me to quit after being back f3 weeks from vacation, thats Im a "pathetic, waste of time", "will never make as much money anywhere else".

At this time I reminded them both that they have said time and time again that if you dont like coming to work or your job to do them a favor and quit, and that I was only doing EXACTLY what they had asked to be done. To which one replied "your ######ing pathetic, get out of my face".

Its funny how 3 years of solid work means nothing to people and that they cant take the fact that someone is trying to better themselves. A shame really for a fortune 500 company thats rated one of Canada's top 50 employers.

Long story short, I have been fishing 4 days this week and Im still getting pay cheques until Spet. 30 from those guys
A) What are you selling that your on a weekly quota

B) Based on your sales manager's behavior did you ask them for the good leads so that you could win the steak knives?

I've recieved one raise after 1 year of employment, and this Sept. would mark the end of year 2. I also recently passed level 1 of the CFA exam, which I think should also be of value to my employer.

The one tricky thing is my boss can fly off the handle pretty quick, and I don't want to find myself in a position I can't maneouver out of.
Is there any sort of formal annual review at your company? They may already be planning on giving you a raise at the end of year 2. If they haven't given you one by around November or so (from my experience some companies are a bit behind schedule when doing these things, though usually the raise would be retroactive to your anniversary date) then maybe approach them, but make sure you have your case as to why you should be paid more.

I would build a business case that shows me as being very valuable to your organzation.

If your quota based, then be able to show that you've hit or exceeded your quotas consistantly over the last year.

If you're not quota based, then illustrate how you've improved your area, or how you've become more efficient and effective in doing your job.

Too many people go into these meetings thinking a raise is an automatic thing, and it might be fore the first while, but too many people get butt hurt because they don't get raise because they really either can't show why they should get one, or they simply haven't earned one.

A CFa level one is not worth a raise. I would ask them instead based on merit.

If you google "The Uniform People" they might be the top result or two.....

On a side note, I took the high road during the whole episode and all in all was kind of surprised how everything kind of went down. The branch GM did make up alot of ground when he personally called me to apologize for the other peoples actions. But when it's all said and done like I said I was surprised how things ended and thought more maturity would have been shown but what's done is done and I start a new gig in a week.

They tried to recruit me a bunch of years ago, I thought that the guy that interviewed me was right where he belonged.

Threads like these make me grateful I've been able to be self employed the last couple of years.

Ashartus/CC

I work as a consultant for a small company involved in O&G, and my compensation is based solely on an hourly rate, no benefits. Over the course of the last year I've gone from being relatively green as is expected for your first 6-12 months of employment in a new position, to successfully leading projects at client offices.

The one kicker is that this isn't what I want to do for a career, it is simply paying the bills at the moment and I would like to squeeze it for every last drop before I move onto something else. Selfish I know, but even if I am planning on finding something else, I still feel that I deserve higher compensation for the increased responsibility I've taken on.

Translation: You were a great salesman who made your company lots of money. Now they will have to find someone else and are pissed off about it.

It always baffles me that managers can never grasp that they can't treat people anyway they want and expect them to continue breaking their backs.

The thing about sales is that if you are great at it, you can make money working just about anywhere. You will most likely be able to make as much or more money somewhere else.

If you've burned your bridges already and this company is as big as you suggest, I'd consider reporting these managers to the company. If they did in fact use explicitives, this could be a big deal for them. Although I'm guessing you may be at the point where you just want to walk away and forget the whole thing.
