“When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me-it still sometimes happens-and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife. They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions. The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again. I don't ever expect to be reunited with Carl. But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is. We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting. Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous-not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance. . . . That pure chance could be so generous and so kind. . . . That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. . . . That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful. . . . The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived. That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday. I don't think I'll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful.”

Ha ha.
That was a nice touch at the end with that Sagan tribute.
As a true Science Expert (which means I sometimes watch shows like this and read total layman books and never passed a science class after high school) I thought it was a great start. They got all the really obvious stuff that everyone should probably already know out of the way in the first episode, so it should get even better.
I did kind of snicker at that rubber looking lizard thing staggering out of the water. I'm sure it was computer generated but it really looked like a puppet.

That was great. The scale of the universe hurts my brain so much.

Before watching this it was clear that Neil Degrasse Tyson was the right choice to host. But after watching that tribute to Carl Sagan at the end and seeing just how much of a personal impact he had on Tyson, you couldn't get a more perfect passing of the torch. Damn that was great

Oh and I loved every freakin minute of this show, it lived up to my very high expectations and then some. The nod to Carl at the end had me teary eyed, this was a perfect hour of inspirational science.

I wonder how common this type of reaction was for the original Cosmos. Obviously there was no twitter, but it really does seem that things are going backwards.

Personally, I don't find anything offensive about religious people trying to reconcile their belief in a deity with the mysteries of the universe. For some people, science is the mechanism for creation. It's certainly more palatable than literal biblical creationists who outright reject science. At the same time though, I don't see why they can't just like the show without having to even bring it up for debate.
For those of us without cable, is there a way to watch the episode online?

The show exceeded my expectations. Tyson is the perfect choice to host.
I think they rushed through a few topics in the opener, and I hope they go back to it in more detail. Ex. they barely mentioned Uranus and Neptune, and that there are worlds bigger than Pluto in the outer reaches. The animation is ok, but I preferred the use of actors in the historical vignettes in the original series. The music was cliche movie-score stuff. The original series had more distinctive themes. The show really loses its flow with the ads. I'm sure it will be out on DVD for Xmas, with many extras.

Some of these tweets really don't fit the caption at the bottom. The tweets by Scheuler and Thelen really show how people can believe in god and accept science. This kind of posting really works a creating a dichotomy between religion and Cosmology/Evolution that doesn't really exist. There is only a conflict between Young Earth Creationists and Cosmology/Evolution.
Pitching science as something that you can only believe in if you abandon religion is just going to polarize moderates. The messaging from these kind of groups needs to change to accept science and all its benefits inclusive of your religion rather than switch religions and worship at the alter of science. By making posts like this it puts Religion and science as competitors rather than science as the explanation of the universe and how things work and religion as a spirtual guide.
Cosmos was great and look forward to watching the whole series. Its unfortunate that instead of being recieved as here is our current scientific knowledge of the universe it will immediately become fodder for the ongoing internet fights of Creationism V. Science.

Loved the show, thought some of the effects were a bit cheesy, but also loved the historical context.
I think Tyson did an admirable job as the host.
