It's pretty hard to accidentally cut yourself with a safety razor though. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Safety razors are all well and good but IMHO straight razors are the way to go.

My routine if I have the time (which is not as often as I would like):

1 steaming hot towel application
2 pre-shave oil application (personal mix of castor oil/sweet almond oil/avocado oil)
3 hot towel application
4 soak badger hair brush in hot hot water
5 lather face with soap
6 extra gratuitous step - more hot towel and lather again
7 shave with grain
8 more lather
9 shave across grain
9 you know it, lather
10 shave against grain
11 rinse with cold water
12 apply witch hazel or toner
13 kill buffalo with knife, eat heart, drink dos equis

I know haters gonna hate, but getting a great shave is my personal zen moment. I don't always shave my face, but when I do I prefer a straight razor.

Like I said, i don't get the chance to do the full routine as often as I would like. When I am out in the field I use an electric to keep my face SCBA compliant.

It's a hobby, as well as maintaining my straights.

Some people like cars, some model trains, I like straight razors. And the whole routine only takes 25 - 30 minutes.

I get razor burn no matter how I shave. I've got olive colored skin and dark hair so even when I shave it looks like I've got a 5o'clock shadow. So I have to go against the grain after the initial pass to get it close. My neck seems to be the hardest spot to get a close shave.

I hate shaving so bad that I've contemplated getting laser hair removal.

I don't have to shave everyday, but I've learned if I wait 2-3 days between shaves I don't get as irritated.

That sounds awesome but I don't think I could pull off doing all that in the 5 minutes it usually takes me to shave.

I have always ended up with bad razor burn as my facial hair thickened up (26 now) and it just seemed to get progressively worse. It seemed to help if I shaved right after a hot shower and always used fresh/sharp razor blades. Also it have to be 2-3 days worth of growth or else is burned so bad. I also started getting the most ####ing painful ingrown hairs at the corners of my mouth on my cheek. OMG FML did they ever hurt.

My solution...... grow a beard. Now all I do is shave my neck and trim the beard down with clippers a couple times a week and I’m good to go.

Also, what is the best beard trimmer out there? I've had a couple different kinds, and the battery life is pretty ridiculous. After a year it won't hold a charge anymore. Thanks.

I'd be interested in hearing recommendations for beard trimmers also. I have a couple of Conair ones, and the built-in battery is pretty sad.

I've had Phillips and Remington ones as well, and the battery sucks. I'd would be willing to spend some money if I could find a good one that works.

I have never found a set of hair clippers or beard trimmers that didnt suck bad. So I kept buying the same old Conair POS from walmart and replacing it every year or so.

A friend of my wife is a hairdresser, and suggested the Groom Pro set from Wahl. My wife said she saw them at Costco for $20 last week, but wasn't sure I still wanted them, so didn't pick them up so I can't say how good they are or not, but for $20 can't go wrong.

I think it really depends on how your hair grows. I've tried a couple different electrics, even splurging on an expensive one and using Lectric Shave. Unfortunately my facial hairs grows basically sideways along the skin (thus having ingrown hairs as well) and I found the electric could not get close enough. I was left with hair's here and there completely unshaven.

I think I may have the same problem.

I used an electric trimmer for a few years, which seemed to work pretty good, but I hate having to constantly buy new ones.

And, I still like the good, clean shave. But not the razor burn that I ALWAYS get as a result.

On a side note, what is the best way to heal razor burn or skin irritation? I constantly get that problem on one side on my neck, and everytime I shave it gets worse.

Use hair conditioner, super hot water and sharp razor.

I used to shave in the shower, with similar results to you, but now whenever I use my razor I turn the hot water on full blast so it gets super hot and it is much improved in regards to irritation.

I have one of the Phillips electrics that i got for a Christmas present when I first started shaving like 12 or 13 years ago. It still holds a charge and does a great job of manicuring both my facial and pubic hair.

Seriously, they are not worth $300, but as a regular daily shaver, and a proponent of a good wet shave, I still use my electric 6/7 days.

hot shower first, shick quattro with aloe foam, not gel. I had the same problems, bics and gillette are cheap and burn the face, Schick's never burn me and last a long time. Shave up on the face, and down on the neck. Most important of all is to do real short strokes, like half an inch repeatedly, too much and you easily irritate and tug on the skin
