CTV Edmonton has some new photos up of the devastation. Almost looks like you see after a tornado. The footprint of a neighbourhood there, but everything else is gone.

Granted, I still think it's asinine. Every time a mechanic mentions slave cylinder a rampage should take place on Twitter.

Found out from a friend at the RCMP that the detachment wasn't destroyed, but they are unsure of damage at this point.

Turned on Calgary news for the first time in months to see some coverage. CTV, maybe 30 seconds. Global, 2 minutes.

Great work.

I guess you need to have a Royal wedding for the media to give a crap. That or if Justin Bieber gets a haircut.

At what point does the title change to "All of Slave Lake is on Fire"?

Can see how completely helpless and cutoff Slave Lake was/is with the 3 fires. All access is crossing the paths of the fires. Hwy 2 goes along the south of the lake and follows the middle fires south boundary to the SE. Hwy 88 follows the opposite north side boundary and goes up the north side of the lake. All access in and out would be sketchy.

Amazing to see the blip of Canyon Creek (first bump on the north side of the left side fire) and how it may have escaped complete devastation.

Mooney + Mitsue oil fields may have escaped as well.

Since CalPuck is pretty damn good at helping out I should also say that I'll be making some donations to the aid effort. I'm tied in pretty closely to the area and know a few guys who may have lost their homes.

If anyone has some toiletries, clean towels, backpacks, clothing, dog food, etc that they'd like to donate let me know. I have lined up a company to help cover the freight of donations to Slave Lake (or into Westlock/Athabasca). PM me or email me at mullen1989@hotmail.com

so why are the fires so bad so early in the spring? wouldn't the trees still be holding a lot of moisture in from the snow thaw?

It's been pretty dry and windy this spring.

During spring, the snow tends to melt when the ground is not fully thawed. This leaves the snow no where to go but somewhere else (flooding) or just evaporating. Snow does help ground moisture to a degree, but spring rains after the snow melts goes a lot further. Add in wind which evaporates any moisture that is left, and it leaves a tinder dry forest.

Yup. Albion and Horizon got shut down yesterday, Pelican Lake / Brintnell apparently today, Red Earth I think is on alert. That is alot of oil production that is being shut-in because of the fires.
