I went there a few weeks back. first time in like 5 years. Super small and super expensive. I had to hit a burger joint after. So disappointed.

There's a new restaurant opening soon in Copperfield Corner called 'Viet Thai Bistro'. It's going in where the Meez used to be. I'm anxious to try the food there, and hoping they serve up a fine bowl of Pho.

I hear this all the time on Beyond and now here, I just don't get all the hate. It's more expensive, sure, but I've tried lots of other places and they just don't compare. It may be just because I am white, but I can't help that!

Any idea when they are going to open? The only other Pho place in the area (by the Coop) just doesn't do it for me, so a good alternative would be more than welcome.

Pho Binh Minh (also called Sunrise) is pretty good. They expanded their menu and introduced other dishes. I really love #73 - two kinds of noodles in a broth, sliced meat, shrimp, wontons, and some other stuff. You get the same sides as you would for pho - basil, bean sprouts, etc., but they also give you these sliced pickled hot peppers. Delicious
Another really good place is up by the Denny's on 16th. Forgot the name of that place, but their Pho Satay is great. If you turn north on 19th from 16th ave NE, it will just be in the strip mall on the NE corner of the next intersection.

No idea to be honest. The only info I could find out about it was this:
CITY OF CALGARY - DEVELOPMENT & BUILDING APPROVALS
DP, LOC AND SB APPLICATION REGISTER
FOR April 23, 2011 TO April 29, 2011
For Ward: 12
Application Date: 2011/04/25
LUD:
Community: COPPERFIELD
Ward: 12
Units: 0
Gross Building Area (M2):
DP2011-1426 Address: 15566 MCIVOR BV SE
Applicant: VIET THAI BISTRO
Description: Change of Use: Restaurant: Food Service Only - Small
Proposed Use: Restaurant: Food Service Only - Small
So they applied for their building permit over a month ago, hopefully it's not too much longer before they're ready to open.

I got a bit more information about Viet Thai Bistro from my dad.
Quote:
Viet Thai Bistro has been slow completing their design and drawings for landlord approval and subsequent building permit. Then they need to provide other documents required for construction of their improvements like insurance, WCB, etc. So, they're a ways off from opening yet. My guess, at least 2 months.

Just to throw another name out there - Giang Nam on 16th Ave NE (just west of Edmonton Tr.) has grown on me lately. At first I wasn't a huge fan, but their spring rolls are delicious, and the soup is good too.
Off to Pho Kim for lunch today and some delicious 17A.

Went to Toa today with a group of 6. It was actually pretty good, and the place is huge, and was packed. Make reservations.

I tried Tamarind yesterday on the West end of downtown, I thought it was very good! And a bowl of Sate Pho is $8.50 which is pretty decent for downtown prices.

Really? I didn't realize they had a location before. This one is in the West End Apartments, on 10th St between 6th and 7th Ave SW.
The guy said they had been open for just over a year now, so maybe they did move from somewhere else. I do remember there being a Viet place where Escoba is now but I don't recall it being named Tamarind. Very well could have been though.

Had it for the first time on Sunday. The Bun I ordered was huge. Shrimp, chicken satay, beef satay and spring roll for like 9 bucks. It was very good.
