Nah, Detroit had 308 last year.
When it comes down to killing each other we can't compete with them, which always suprises me as youd think they'd be so safe, what with all them guns for self defence and all.

If I lived in Edmonton, I'd be killing people too.

So Calgary has 4 murders for 1,242,624 people, and Edmonton has (likely) 42 for 1,176,307 people.

Those rates are (murders per 100,000)

Edmonton: 3.57
Calgary: 0.32

Kinda crazy how it's off by at least a full order of magnitude eh?

Where?? River valley, U of A campus & maybe Whyte Ave on a summer day...in the middle of the day when there's not puke & blood all over it. Outside of that I'm stumped.

And that's not some random shot at the city, I just say that because every time I drive to Calgary, when I get into the city (especially the downtown core) I'm always struck by how much nicer it looks.

Not intending to inflate the stats, but Edmonton's pop is just over 800,000, not 1.7 million as quoted. The correct number makes it look worse.

1.7 MM or 1.17 MM? Wiki indicates that Statscan estimated 1,155,383 in 2009 and 1,230,248 for Calgary.

Close enough to be in the same ballpark comparison wise.

The CMA and the City are not the same thing. The murder stats are city population only, so the comparing population should be city only.

A murder in Spruce Grove would not be reflected in Edmonton's total of 42.

If Wiki says that, it's wrong; trust me, I know. I'm an area politician. It's 800K give or take in Edmonton city.

Both cities are having "off years", just in opposite directions.

I'm pretty sure Calgary is at six right now. Not that changes the comparison much.

What's also surprising to me is the low murder rates in other big cities in Canada as well. Toronto, with over 5 million people has had like 32 or something like that. I haven't heard anything about what's going on in Vancouver lately, but the last time Calgary's low murder rate was brought up by the media they had mentioned that Vancouver was sitting at 9. I think that was mid-summerish.

Alright so for arguments sake assume Edmonton's city population is around 800,000 and Calgary's is around 1,000,000.

That would make the murder rates 5.25 for Edmonton and 0.4 for Calgary.

Yeah, probably.

Just looking for a quickie numbers - end of the day though, order of magnitude - it's not like Edmonton has 10 times the population of Calgary.

Calgary's "off" year was when we hit 30. We had less than 20 last year too.

Yeah, but he's just saying that if we were both closer to average, there wouldn't be that much of a descrepency between the two cities.

I'm not sure of the exact averages, but I believe Calgary's probably in the low to mid twenties over the last ten years, while Edmonton is probably mid to high twenties.
