it would not surprise me at all to see harper lose another seat in edmonton after the pulled support for the expo bid.
The city rallied some of its most impressive citizens (i.e. recently retired ceo of stantec, etc) at the request of the Feds to put a bid together. Then the rug was pulled without consultation on the alleged comment of "security costs", but then it was leaked by Ottawa bureaucrats that the feds would never have supported canada's 150th year in "Edmonton" and that the Edmonton cabinet minister (Rona Ambrose) did not go to bat for the city.
High profile small c conservatives went ballistic and are openly advocating that citizens respond with their vote. Most troubling to the Conservatives is that the popular Edmonton mayor and open conservative Stephen Mandell is leading the charge. Mandell came out and said that the city was better served in terms of Federal Gov't support under Anne McLellan than it has been under 100% tory support even in a Tory gov't. That really resonated around the water coolers here.
Peter Goldring's seat in Edmonton East and Laurie Hawn's seat are both at risk (Goldring from NDP and Hawn Liberal). Linda Duncan took Rahim Jaffer's seat last election and will be in a dogfight again, but has seen her public profile as a critic skyrocket after the leaked Jason Kenny memo regarding immigration and voter strategy. Rumour has it that Brian Mason, leader of the provincial NDP will run against Goldring in Edmonton East, which is where Mason's provincial riding is.
When it comes to counting on one's fingers and toes, Harper better hope that the money diverted to Quebec more than makes up for the lost seat (or two) in Edmonton.

The Liberals have used misrepresentation and attack ads throughout their time as well.
Its not just a conservative thing.
And the biggest reason why you don't see more from the Liberal's is that they're basically broke.
Not to the same extent. This is why it's so hard for the Conservatives to get a majority. They alienate quite a lot of people by attacking others. Why do this?
Isn't Ambrose the MP for Stony Plain or whatever? Technically not Edmonton. So why would she care? That's like saying Kevin Sorenson should support something the city of Calgary wants.

I live in Anders riding. i haven't seen him for 10 years!
and how can you forget Liberal attack ads? remember the soldiers in our streets one?
?? cant remember. But were they attacking the Harper directly? or was it the conservatives as a whole?
I live in Anders riding and i wish the other parties can come up with a competent candidate against him. This might be the only calgary riding which can be won by another party.

She is the person in Cabinet who is supposed to have Edmonton's ear and represent Edmonton's interest. It's why you see a cabinet appointment from every major city (except Calgary under the Chretien gov't) and why Harper appointed guys to the Senate so they could represent Montreal for example.

Our government is skewed and broken and that is just the way it is.
Each province receives a percentage of the seats in parliament in direct proportion to its population -- that's the exact opposite of being skewed. You may not like it, but that doesn't make it "skewed and broken".
Currently a few provinces are either slightly over- or under-represented because electoral districts have not been redrawn recently to reflect population data from the latest census. Alberta, BC, and Ontario have a few seats less than they should; Quebec is the only province with exactly the right amount of seats that their population mandates.

I'm also in Calgary West. Every successive election sees him under a stronger attack but then he wins by a larger margin each time. It's mind-blowing (and not in a good way).
My only thought is that one of the other parties have to run a candidate named Rob Anderson and hope that the confusion unseats Anders.

The battle to unseat Anders will always be fought within the constituency association. The NDP will never elect an MP in this city, and the Liberals don't carry much better odds. Anders may be a twit, but there really is no other alternative once he wins the party nomination.

Why would anyone want to give the Harper/Anders Conservative a majority government? or want one.

Once again you assume stupidity in that I do not know how the seats are allocated - but thanks for stating the obvious.
Representation by population does not work with vast regional differences. Saying that it is not skewed is disingenuous when the population distribution is massively skewed. As such, representation by population encourages regional abuse as the lesser populated regions do not have the political clout to matter to the policy makers. The party in power will continue to pander to the centers of population (regardless of which party) and neglect those that cannot sway the vote.
Every time I see or hear Jack Layton, all I can think of now is his desperate attempt to get face time showing he's a true Canadian during the gold medal game.
Oh man Jack, that excited girl's arm is in your face ... get that s### outta the way, you've got CTV cameras to grease up!

I don't get this, do the opposition have some zinger of a controversy they are just waiting to unleash? If not why would they do this? Aren't the Libs hurting for cash, this will just exhaust their war chest.

BS. Sheila Copps called Preston Manning "the David Duke of Canada."
