It just seems mean spirited to me. She's a really swee girl and doesn't deseve this mess, but she could have avoided it I agree.

The only good to come out of this is that "theonlywhiteout" is turning out to be a pretty solid dude, although he should probably nix any details on what she did/didn't say/do.

I'm trying to give out as little detail as possible or keep it night and vague, I dont want advice seeking to bite her later of course

Very slim chance of her getting her old insurance company to pay, so lets go ahead with the uninsured option. The talk of the government paying things out is really only a victims assistance fund for injuries caused by an uninsured driver. This will will have no bearing on property damage.
The IBC chart can be quite confusing. It only applies to insurance companies, not uninsured and not any other party who isn't a part of the agreement. I think I read one of the vehicles was a cab? If so, they will not be apart of this chart ruling and she could be on the hook for loss of use on the cab. It's been a while for me, so I cant remember. But she may have to pay property damage for 1 or all 3 of the vehicles in front of her unless there are witnesses and some evidence of negligence of those in front of her. And she would most likely be responsible for all injuries.
So in the end, if she was able to push to a 4th vehicle, she was not going very slow. Property damages I would think at minimum to be $10,000 to the other 3 vehicles. And I will assume there will be injuries reported, so that could really bump things up. A lawyer is a prerequisite here.

Fair enough. It should be noted that the fault chart is based on legal precedents though. So while it won't apply to a person insured with a company that is not signatory or won't apply to an uninsured motorist that legal precedent doesn't make it any easier to be absolved of liability.

Pretty please tell me she works in the service industry or for Westjet.

If indeed the whole situation arose due to carelessness or laziness, then no, I don't like watching people crash and burn because of it. I feel sorry for her situation, but I shake my head at how easily this could have been avoided had she just been a bit more attentive.
It does sound kind of fishy though that the insurance company would cancel her insurance right away because she didn't pay $12. I'm thinking she's probably missed mutiple payments and just didn't tell you. Don't insurance companies take 2 payments initially just in case you forget to pay one month?

Am I the only one who's suspicious that all these stories start with 'a friend of mine'......make sure you settle all legal action before you go to Mexico.

Unfortunately, she does deserve this mess. Based on the details, she effed up several times, leading to this.
1. She got NSFed on an insurance payment.
2. She moved and failed to put in a change of address with Canada Post.
3. She moved and failed to update her address with the insurance company (and I'm betting the motor vechicle registry too)
4. Faxes get lost. If her insurer did receive the fax, she would have been sent new pink cards. As she obviously didn't, she should have followed up.
5. She allowed this to happen over a time period long enough that the insurance company cancelled her.
6. She got into a crash while driving without insurance.
It really sucks, and I hope she manages to find a way through this mess, but she most definitely deserves it. As with others, getting a lawyer is her best option, and something she needs to do quickly. Good luck to her though, because it does suck when a series of minor errors turn into a major problem.
I'll add 7. for everyone's general reference: Always get *all* information in a crash, including VIN if you can.

Also, I am assuming this accident happened fairly recently, just because the parties involved felt okay at the scene or have nor reported injury yet does not mean they won't do so. 9 times out of 10 it takes a few days for a minor injury to be reported. Alot of people have pain and stiffness come on the next couple of days following the loss, others have it intially but assume it will go away in short order and dont report it right away and others still go home, talk to mom, dad, the mailman, Bill at work etc. and realize all they have to do is say their neck/back is sore, go to Chiro 20 times and they get an easy $4-5K.
Unfortunatley for your friend, this will likely get quite ugly, and before she has Vlad or one of his brethern on her arse she should probably get representation ASAP.
