Not go totally off topic, but this is why I'm looking forward to Sochi 2014 so much. They were embarrassed in Vancouver last year, I'm expecting them to go full Russian on us next time.
Have the Canadian hockey team sleeping in old military prisons or Gulags out in Siberia, yeah, I could see it.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.
Yeah, I agree, Uncle Joe was an interesting mix. He was the ultimate political animal, but he was fueled by paranoia and a very strange version of patriatism.
He saw himself as the Great Leader, and I think that he was the last true believer of Soviet Style socialism.
And he was a very brilliant man with a boat load of charisma.
I never did understand why he and Mao didn't get along, in the end they wanted the same things and operated the same way.
He might be upwards of 50 million. Regardless, the amount of people that were killed in China and the USSR, in the name of the great socialist movements is, well, sickening.
Mao accounted for 70 million himself... What's Stalin at?
I think that was just for the Great Leap Forward wasn't it?
I just finished reading Mao's biography.
Besides the fact that he liked to plow very young virgins. He didn't bath or brush his teeth for 27 years. Found out that one of his advisors had cancer and denied him any medical treatment so that he would suffer. He was a swell guy and a kind and generous leader.

We read the same biography I think - very good - can't remember the author's name... The fellow who was not allowed treatment was Chou En Lai if I recall correctly - he was the man who negotiated the "opening to China" with Kissinger in the early 70's.
I've already read the court of the red tsar and really liked it, I picked up Young Stalin on the weekend, and another biography that covers birth to death.
Thanks for the recommendations.
