I don't buy the covid thing.
It's not like pandemics happen every other year.
I think it was pretty clear from Tkachuks list he wanted to go to a team with a #1 center.

I don't get that at all....
Colorado, Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina, etc.. all not on the list.
But Nashville and Dallas are? I guess Roope Hintz is really drawing in the talent?

Was Nashville and Dallas on his list?
Sounded like it was small and teams got eliminated early. Vegas, St. Louis, Carolina, Tampa and Florida.

Does it matter during your playing career ? The team takes care of that stuff.
Remember when the Flames jumped the que for the Flu vaccine.

When the Flames drafted Coronato there were a few who's first reaction was exactly that. Can't remember if that was you and I don't care 18 months later if it was. But if that's the reaction this year, I won't go easy on those posters. The Flames need to draft better talent and the US is starting to emerge as the number one source of high level talent. You don't need to worry about a high end player leaving 8 years later if you don't draft any high end players because of birth certificate is a surefire way to be terrible for a long time.
|
Getting 8 years out of a player is a pretty long career in my mind, and you are likely to get their best seasons. We are seeing it with Huberdeau and Gaudreau cratering, and Tkachuk still having great seasons.
I would rather not tie our team up with long contracts after the 8-10 years anyways.

No there isn’t. Conroy seems statistically to be a rare exception to the rule; ‘everything else being equal, US born players choose to play in the USA.’

I didn't read the entire thread, but who are the players who have not wanted to play for the Flames when they had a chance to get out?
Tkachuk
Gaudreau
Fox
Lidstrom
Hanifan
I'm not putting Tanev on the list because I don't think the Flames wanted to extend him with a long-term contract. Everyone above had that option, but declined.
There probably should be more on my list. When I look at it though, I see four Americans and one Swede. That tells me that if all things are equal, I'd maybe look for a player that isn't American.

I wouldn't even include Lindholm or Hanifin. I believe they wanted to move on because things fell apart with the Flames, not because of any issues playing in Calgary or Canada. It was a snowball effect with Gaudreau and Tkachuk moving that caused the bleeding we are seeing. Don't forget Treliving as well. Never a good look when a GM actually quits as well. All the stuff he said to try and build up the image of Calgary and how the perception at the time wasn't fair, only to follow it up with an "I'm out of here" once his contract was up. That probably added to the current dark cloud as much as any player doing the same thing. He didn't even follow it up with a statement to the fans like most star players do when they leave.

Most of these players leave because the team’s showing a lack of success, and would prefer to be on a team that has a chance. Although with the at said, it does seem lately that player just aren’t interested in being apart of this great city. And that just makes me sad

I know this thread is on nationality, but haven't seen this posted yet - capfriendly has a cool tool that shows you the variation of income depending on your team (With a number of assumptions built in). https://www.capfriendly.com/income-tax-calculator
$$$ definitely comes into play, and there are some front runners in terms of lower tax, but the variance isn't as much as I thought it would be.

Just stockpile talent. Eventually when the team starts to be undeniable on the ice and entertaining to watch, players will begin to change their tune.
Edmonton is a worse city in every aspect but the mcwindow and the buzz around it has a number of players fooled into thinking there's something worth being a part of.
There are things to actually like and enjoy about the city of calgary, it just needs to provide reasons for positivity around where the team is heading that people can see and agree with. Develop an up-and-coming narrative around the club. That starts with nailing some of these draft picks.

I wouldn’t refrain from drafting an American if they were the best player available but the flight risk is definitely a factor to consider when drafting. If two prospects seem virtually identical I’d prefer they take the Canadian or European over the American.

It was a pretty jarring reminder that borders matter though. I think it definitely affected some people's thoughts about living abroad.

I think if the Flames are a good team that makes the playoffs every year and goes on deep playoff runs, players will want to stay. Instead, the Flames were a team that alternated between missing the playoffs and getting eliminated in the 1st round.

There can't be any debate that it really impacted the Gaudreaus who are a close family, and were going through a lot of stuff during COVID.

I don't wanna bash Johnny because he was a big part of the Flames for so long but his contract is looking pretty similar to Huberdeau's. Do we think having him on the books for $9m or whatever Tre offered him would have the Flames closer to the Stanley Cup?

I think it’s widely believed the Flames offered Gaudreau what Huberdeau ended up getting.
It would have been $10.5 for eight years.

That is cool.
Huberdeau's net income is $5,484,843
In Dallas, it would be $6,337,687
In Florida, it would be $6,338,350
In Vegas, it would be $6,332,149
In NYR, it would be $5,486,537
In Montreal, it would be $4,920,661
In Toronto, it would be $4,907,063
In Vancouver, it would be $5,295,954
In LA, it would be $5,025,470
In Pittsburgh, it would be $5,752,250
In Columbus, it would be $5,616,572
In Nashville, it would be $6,339,417
It's nice to finally see numbers on this debate. Thank you for posting.
