I remember riding dirt bikes where the Shawnessy shopping center is. And I'm only 31. An older guy I know that loves to yammer about this kind of stuff tells me about when he was a kid, they build Chinook Center wayyy the F out of town, and everyone thought he was crazy. Now who's laughing...? Mallzac?

I'm pretty sure there were 2 Alberta Pool elevators in Midnapore. I also remember the time when passing those elevators meant you were almost in Calgary.
|
I also remember my folks telling me a few times when I was heading out and about on my bike,
'If you go south of the elevator you've gone too far and should turn around or you'll never find your way home'
Which was OK really because Fish Creek was where I was heading anyways. lol

This is one of the best threads ever on CP, imo.
I'll play this game tomorrow.

This thread is awesome, it's really amazing how much everything has changed. I wonder what Calgary will look like in 50 more years.

Wow that building is beautiful. What was the reason behind completely ruining it?

It's still there..they just surrounded it with ugly's and a parkade. Personally I think they should have left it alone and built up the campus for more students by building north across 16th. Nothing but eye-sore there anyway.
My uncle went there in 1945, it was an Air-Force training school during the war.

How about showing comparison pictures of the same thing.
Current:
(well before the underground parkade that is being built in the field in front, the building is still the same)
Heritage Hall is mostly untouched. The building that you showed is the Heart Building and is beside and semi-attached to Heritage Hall.

To be fair, that's a completely different angle. You can still see the best part of the building from the south side:

I couldn't find a current pic with the whole building..thanks. But my point was they surrounded it over the years not changed it.

That 1885 picture is just way too cool. It looks damn near like it was taken in the exact spot as the two I just posted (Scotchman's Hill).

I remember that as the Romeo & Juliet Inn, at least in the late 70s ~ early 80s. It's located on that hill where Greenwood Village trailer park is located, across the Trans Canada from Paskapoo (Canada Olympic Park). I heard that it burnt down, but I'm not sure.
Does anybody here remember "Happy Valley"? A little before my time and never got to go there, but I was always curious about it as a kid.

Hey you can see my office.
I drove by today and they are finally tearing down that piece of crap parkade on 16th. That has to be the ugliest structure built in history. I am going to miss the smell of urine in the stairwells though. Wakes me up better than coffee.
They gave us a 3d animated tour of all the new buildings that they are building on campus and the new TTC building going in on 16th is going to be pretty awesome. I wish they would move my office there.

Happy valley, Yeah i camped there years ago, lots of drugs and booze. If my geographic's are correct it's now valley ridge. I think that's where Trudeau was booed off the stage one time.
