In this scenario, they wouldn't be able to activate Sekera until they become cap compliant.
If they are found to be deliberately keeping a healthy Sekera on LTIR, they could get nailed to the wall for cap circumvention.

When he comes back mid season, does his full cap hit apply?

His full hit applies regardless. It gets a little complicated, but essentially, LTIR allows you to exceed the salary cap by that player's salary while they are injured; it doesn't make it go away. If the Oilers are capped out and Sekera returned after missing half the season, Edmonton would have to clear space equal to the remaining half of his salary ($2.75m). But they couldn't bank any cap space for the half season that he missed.

I feel sorry for the London Knights.
They had a 30 in 31 chance to have their captain back this season...

Which means we're cheering for a good year for Puljujarvi. Individually only obviously. 2.5M in potential performance bonuses that any earned would have to be allocated all to next year basically.
Oilers could have more than 20M allocated to Lucic, Sekera, Strome, Kassian, bonus overages and buyouts. Imagine 20M of dead cap on a team ha.

I honestly don't know if it changes anything for Bouchard. Leaving all the chest-thumping aside, Todd McLellan is not an idiot or a bad coach. I think he was likely to get a 9 game look regardless of whether Sekera was injured or not, and I think he was going to go up or down based on those 9 games regardless as well. McLellan will see that he isn't ready to play defense at this level and that'll be that.
... Of course, if that doesn't happen, then lololol Oilers.

It's not strictly up to him. I think we've seen that's the modus operandi of this organization for a while.

Given how the kid got walked against Sweden he isn't ready for NHL speed at all. Only the Oilers brass could look the other way on this and let him stay.
So count on it!

I hope Nurse holds out and demands something ridiculous like 7M.
They simply can't afford to have Nurse miss games. They will have to cave.

I would say that at a demand of $7 million, they could afford to let him sit. It's not like he makes them appreciably better.

Direct quote from Darnell Nurse's agent:
“If they’ve got $5 million in cap space (now), it’s not going to be a long-term deal.”
Dude is clearly looking for more than that. Obviously negotiating through the media and so forth, but I doubt it would be less than $5x7.

LOL, I think this display of mental gymnastics sums up the Oilers fanbase nicely.

Thanks! So ultimately, if I understand correctly, they theoretically can sign players for more than the 4.9m left in their cap space. However, they probably shouldn't sign 4.9m plus the whole value of Sekera's contract, because there's a reasonable chance he might be playing at some point in 2019. They need to come up with a conservative estimate of when he might return, and plan to exceed the cap only by that 'added' amount (= Sekera's total contract * anticipated fraction of season missed due to injury)

During the off-season, you can exceed the cap by 10%, so that's their upper limit right now. For opening day, they need to have no more than the cap + all LTIR (and less any bonus payments that carried over from last year). And then, yes, once Sekera returns, they need to clear salary equal to what Sekera would still be owed for the rest of the season.

So is he that full of himself, or is he just trying to engineer his way out of Edmonton?
Or both?
