Actually all 6 movies are canon as well as Clone Wars and Rebels, and some of the recently released books and comics.
So for example Plageous is considered Canon.
But I'm not in the Plageous is Snoke camp, because it would make Palpatine look like a bone head.
I'm aware of what is officially canon. That's why I said in practice not officially. JJ has been pretty clear he has no interest in making things convoluted.
Basically it means official backstory. Or any story considered official.
In e case of Star Wars there are over 30 years of books, tv shows, comic books, videos games that used to be canon. They are collectively referred to as Expanded Universe or EU. Recently Disney said that all that stuff is no longer canon. Therefore now unofficial.
Technically the stuff Captain listed is still canon but JJ Abrams has been pretty clear imo that he doesn't give two craps about anything that isn't the original 3 movies.
Most of the crazy theories you see on the Internet and many you see from Captain rely on a bunch of super convoluted EU stuff that, again imo, JJ won't include in a million years because all it does is confuse casual fans. He wants this stuff to be easy for kids and casual fans to understand and get into.

JJ isn't writing or directing the next episode, and he's one of a handful of executive producers. I'm sure his opinion holds weight, but it also seems clear he doesn't have final say. Even though I agree that the convoluted stuff is unlikely to make it into the movie.
My understanding is those sources haven't been fired out of cannon. There's no reference to that in the movies.
I agree. Palpatine sharing the story with Anakin doesn't necessarily mean anything. He could just simply be tempting Anakin with this power that only Sith have figured out how to manipulate. And it's a convenient story to tempt Anakin, not that everything Palpatine experienced would be relevant to trying to coerce Anakin to the Dark side.
During the audience Q&A portion of the pair’s chat, the first in the festival’s Directors series of talks, a young boy drew cheers from the crowd and an answer (of sorts) from Abrams when he asked the Star Wars: The Force Awakens director who Rey’s parents are.
“Rey’s parents are not in Episode VII,” he told the audience. “So I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too.”

Ah, ok. I see where you`re coming from.
Although they don`t bluntly say it, it is heavily implied as Kavvy pointed out (with video). What I think is the most beautifully acted scene in all of the prequels. Ian McDiarmid nails it and you can tell by the look on his face he totally did it, and enjoyed it.
Well... this scene in Canon heavily implies it..... Ignoring the implications of these scene would be embarrassing
Not to me. I always took that as either as a Sith legend of long ago or a complete fabrication to manipulate Anakin. It never came off to me as him talking about what he did last week. If that was the case, wouldn't he know how to stop people from dying instead of have to discover the power together with Anakin as mentioned at the end of the movie. Didn't the apprentice in the story learn everything from the master? Also, if it just happened why would it be a story the Jedi know, but don't talk about?
Why is this movie still not for rent? Frustrating.
