It doesn't excuse Bertuzzi's actions, but the league, and the referees, were culpable too. Here, there should have been a major and a game misconduct, and there wasn't, so this happened. It's not even really surprising.
The NHL needs to take the lesson and dish out a hefty suspension to both players, and send a message that the refs got this wrong and that even if they get it wrong you cannot do what Gudbranson did.
Fortunately that's surely the only play tonight involving a dangerous hit that should lead to someone being suspended for a long period of - sorry, what's that you say about Kyle Connor?

Besides the outcome of Moore getting a serious injury and Cousins skating away unharmed, the other big difference is the amount of time between the incidents, and the retribution and the fact that Bertuzzi isn't the one that Moore hit (although I do think Crawford really played a big roll in that). The hit on Gudbranson was also a lot worse than the hit on Naslund. I think Moore was definitely hitting to punish Naslund physically and didn't care about anything else, but he also didn't count on Naslund to be in a prone position like that when the hit was executed. Cousins, I believe, should have been much more aware.
I think both situations are similar in that they wanted to kick the guys ass, but not injure them. Whether or not a serious injury occurs is pretty much just luck. I don't think Bertuzzi is the villain many people painted him as, he was just dumb. A lot of people really do not understand just how badly things can go in those situations. Cousins and Gudbranson are lucky that it wasn't a lot worse, because it could have easily been another Moore situation.
