But I doubt Cliff Fletcher or the Flames regret it

Yeah, His counting stats havn't improved from his rookie year and his possession stats aren't anything to write home about. Plus his ELC is done now and I have no idea what he'll want on his 2nd contract.
It's tempting because of the obvious upside but not a slam dunk trade IMO.

Stars look like they might be able to sneak that trade as proposed in with like tens of thousands of dollars in cap remaining.
Again, if the Stars want to deal Nich for a Russell and Hudler package, I'd pull that trigger all the day long. I'm not putting too much stock in this down year.
Even if you ponied up 4m a season to Nich for a some term it'll be a major steal.

Yeah the Flames don't win the cup without Ramage. Whether or not they would have one or more with Hull is an unknown. But you can't second guess that deal

Knowing the Flames management from the early 90's, I think we would have just lost Hull for next to nothing. Just like most of the other parts of that cup winning team.

Considering Granlund was being scratched before the Monahan/Gaudreau/Bouma disciplinary action, probably not.

Why Cliff Fletcher traded Hull.....
Quote:
“Trading Hull … we knew what we were doing when we did it. I think,” laughs Fletcher. “I said then, when we made the deal, that he’d score 150 goals the next three years. Turns out, he got 160.
“But we got Wamsley, who was very important to the group and we got Ramage and if you remember back Gary Suter got hurt in the first round and Ramage had a helluva playoff. At the time we had three right wingers who had scored 50 goals — Lanny, Hakan Loob and Joey Mullen. So I felt I could do it.
“As I said, it was a process.

Exactly! The trade helped to get us to win the Cup in 89. Anytime you can make a trade that improves your chances of winning a Cup you make it. Besides Fletcher was no dummy and had a reputation of making shrewd trades that only made the Flames a better hockey club. McDonald, Gilmour, McCrimmon, Mullen etc are great examples.

One of the worst trade in Flames history? Really? Without the trade, the Flames might not win their first cup, let alone 2 or 3 more. The could've, should've, would've scenario doesn't hold, the line up the Flames had at that time was good enough go win 1 or 2 more, but they didn't. Was it because they lack scoring? Or their defense not up to par. Hull had never known for his defensive play. What make you think that having Hull will make a difference?

Obviously no trade comes with a guarantee. But ill take a cup over any player, any HOF career, and point total. I dont care if we win with a gang of pluggers or perennial MVP candidates. The Flames have one cup, so for that reason alone, I consider any move leading up to that moment a success. Hell if in 04 we had traded iginla away for lynn loyns....... okay im pushing my luck

I'm beginning to get the feeling this could be a pretty quiet deadline for the Flames.

If I'm Treliving I'm moving on Hutchinson out of Winnipeg ASAP:
Quote:
Ken Wiebe @WiebeSunSports
Ondrej Pavelec will be activated off IR by #NHLJets today and Connor Hellebuyck will be assigned to #AHL for the short term
With this move, the 22-year-old netminder is a victim of the CBA. Despite the fact that Hellebuyck has been far and away the best Jets goaltender this season, he doesn't require waivers to be sent down, unlike his fellow goaltenders Michael Hutchinson and the recently activated Ondrej Pavelec (knee). Having said that, head coach Paul Maurice gave the impression that Hellebuyck's time in the minors would be brief.
|
Sounds like the only reason they had to send down Hellebuyck was to protect Hutch from waivers in hopes of an actual return for him.
If I'm Treliving I'm making this deal now. Can't be too expensive to acquire and he's of the right age and aside from this season he's be a solid goalie of right age who might surprise with starter duties. At worst he's a solid backup next season:

Sure seems like a whole lot of "meh" to me.
I'd rather the Flames trade for draft picks myself, because we already have plenty of underwhelming AHL/NHL tweeners and fair to middling NHL depth players.

We have zero right wing depth, it needs to be addressed.
