The point you're missing is that it's being done without any 3rd party plugins whatsover. It's nothing but browser and HTML5.

A browser that implements HTML5.
The only difference between a 3rd party plugin and something that's built into the browser is who codes it, otherwise it's still just a chunk of code that does something.
And as we've seen from various browsers with differing implementations of other "standards" of HTML, CSS, javascript, etc etc the fact that the chunk of code is built into the browser isn't at all a guarantee that it's going to work properly or well.

Thank God we finally have an Apple thread so we don't have to clog up the Tech Forum anymore. Good on the OP. There were more Apple threads on the front page than Flames threads on the front page of the fire and ice board.

Maybe that is because Apple made the playoffs.

In Honolulu both in Waikiki and in Ala Mouana Shopping Centre there is no shortage of ipads. They both said that buying 4 at either location was no problem - only 2 of the 3G version though for a while at least they said.

It didn't work. Apparentely FanIn80 somehow decided that people didn't like this thread and now he's starting individual ones again.

I think he "somehow decided" based on several people in this thread saying that they didn't like it. Just guessing

Seriously?
For one thing, like I stated in the first topic of this thread, big stories should still have their own threads. I think one of the biggest PC game publishers on the planet deciding to rebuild their library from the ground up to run on Macs is pretty big news.
But, since I did make the comment about people not liking the megathread concept... I'll humour you:

I lost track of the Round 1 playoff threads even and ended up getting the news from TSN rather than the more accurate and timely source of CP

Looks like, out of the 4 people who commented on it, the score is 3-1 against the megathread. I didn't count you in those numbers, since you haven't commented one way or the other... also, since you're either first or second in total posts in every single Apple thread on the front page, I'm going to guess that you really don't care where the threads are posted... if it's about Apple, you're showing up.
Edit: Actually, I made a mistake. It turns out you did comment about this thread...

I really hope this starts sooner than later, but I have a big feeling that it's going to take a couple of years for this transition to change. In the past couple of months, I've been approached twice to build flash web sites and each time I've laid solid and concise reasons why it's bad for a person's business and how a flash site will do more harm than good.
But tach time, I've been met with extreme resistance.
Web design and development is still a mythical industry for a majority of the population and although you can explain the problems with mobile devices, the issues with SEO and Content Management, at the end of the day people still want the spiny globe with lighting and unicorns popping out from it.

Credit where credit is due, Adobe has released a preview version of Flash that is hardware accelerated on current nvidia equipped iMac and Macbooks.
Get it here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/gala/
It works really, really nicely! If you see a small white square in the top left corner of a video, you know hardware accel has kicked in. So love or hate Flash, this is probably currently the best implementation out there for Apple users.
The ultimate irony, of course, is that Apple exposed an API for h.264 hardware decode, which Flash now implements, but that ironically, that same h.264 content is what is being positioned as the replacement for much of what Flash does in common usage. So if you like Flash, this is great for you. If you hate Flash, realize that encouraging more content to go h.264 is ultimately leading to Flash's demise, so you can feel good about running this. Win Win!
I don't care, I'm just happy to have an improved tool available to me. Thanks Adobe!

It’s a preview version - so far, in 3 days of use, including lots more youtube than usual, I haven’t seen it crash. It’s rare that I see Flash crash on my machine though, so certainly YMMV.
I used the Adobe supplied uninstaller available here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html to remove the previous version of Flash I was using prior to installing this preview version.

Nice. This is actually pretty good news. Sad that it took Apple and Microsoft threatening to pull the plug to get some progress, but the end ultimately justifies the means.

Looks like the users aren't the only ones taking interest in Apple's actions lately...

Regulators consider investigating Apple over antitrust concerns: source
Gabriel Madway
10:01 EST Tuesday, May 04, 2010
San Francisco — Regulators are considering an inquiry into whether Apple Inc. violates antitrust law by requiring that its programming tools be used to write applications for the iPad and iPhone, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.
The news comes amidst a high-profile dustup between Apple and Adobe Systems Inc. , which makes the widely used Flash software to provide video and build games.
The New York Post first reported regulators' interest in Apple's policy. The paper reported that the two agencies were locked in negotiations over which would handle the inquiry, and a decision was expected shortly.
“What they're (Apple) doing is clearly anticompetitive ... They want one superhighway and they're the tollkeeper on that superhighway,” said David Balto, a former FTC policy director.

It will be interesting to see how any anti-trust decisions over the app store and general closed development cycle play out - When you think about it, many other consumer electronics have a similar policies, especially game consoles.

I can't think of any other consumer electronics that have the same market share that Apple does in their respective markets, though. That's the key here, imo.
Apple pretty well owns the mobile app market. If there were multiple players in the market and Apple had less than half of it, I don't think this would be a big deal as developers that wanted to cross-compile apps would still have viable alternatives to sell their apps.
I think a good question to ask, but by no means the only question to ask, when considering if this is anti-competitive behaviour is whether or not Apple would make the same move if they didn't totally own the mobile app market. Something tells me if Android had 95% of the market, they'd be welcoming cross-compiling with open arms and doing everything they could to encourage it.
