Don't forget Lou Reed before that. It's been a tough year for music fans. All 3 were hugely influential in modern music.

Tributes are pouring in:

"David’s friendship was the light of my life. I never met such a brilliant person. He was the best there is". - Iggy Pop

You were the single flame in the center of it all. Thank you David
X chrissie hynde

Whenever I hear his music, I’m a teenager again, taking my first taste of something ungendered, transgressive. At a crucial moment in my adolescence, David Bowie showed me that masculinity wasn't the only way to attract girls and, for that, I thank him.
- Billy Bragg

We are all David Bowie's children. He inspired us and changed our lives. Love, gratitude and respect always for him and his work. Our truest condolences and sympathy to his family. Neil and Chris x (Pet Shop Boys)

"John and David respected each other," Ono wrote. "They were well matched in intellect and talent. As John and I had very few friends, we felt David was as close as family." - Yoko Ono

"David Bowie was one of the greatest artists of all time. I feel privileged that I ever got to know him. He gave Devo his blessing. He remained true to his art until the end like I wanted so badly for us to do." - Gerald V. Casale/DEVO

Thanks for a lifetime of amazing music. RIP David Bowie.
Sincerely,
Patterson Hood and The DBTs

Love you, David Bowie. Rest in peace. - Robert Pollard

"Hero" - Deborah Harry

Inspiring us from our earliest days - our name 'Simple Minds' was taken from a Bowie lyric - he continues to inspires us today, as we work on our 18th album. - Jim Kerr

He was a fearsome talent, and the loss to Music and Culture from his passing is inestimable. In and out of our lives, always challenging and innovative, and … shocking. But this news is hard to take in. I had no idea he was close to death. Would like to have said something …Very sad. Sincere condolences to his family. But what a life. All hail, David Bowie, Star Man, Hero. RIP. - Brian May

No other artist has meant as much to me personally or inspired my own songs as much. What a spirit. What an inspiration. What a shining example of the beauty that humanity can create. Bless him. -BD (Spoon)

"He was an artist of the twentieth and twenty-first century, and probably introduced more concepts, styles and subversive thinking to the popular consciousness than anyone else." - Ian Smith

I gasped when I read the headline this morning. I am absolutely floored by this. Like others have stated, I didn't even know he was ill.

no return of The thin white duke

Rest in Peace Davey Jones.

Here's a good video that talks about the Bowie, Lou and Iggy Pop era.

RIP Bowie.

After a life like that to still make to 69 is awesome, if not for cancer he'd still be going strong.

Well earned rest nonetheless.

Very sad day. I knew Bowie as the freaky guy from Labyrinth long before I knew he was a musician. It wasn't until later that I learned to love his music.

From his new album:

Lyrics are very touching knowing that he passed.

Spoiler!

Tony Visconti acknowledges that Blackstar was Bowie's "parting gift"

Quote:
He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life - a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn't, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.

Seems like every artist I actively follow on Facebook seems to have commented on this. Even some you might not obviously think of as influenced by Bowie, such as Laibach. (Although when you think of it, of course they were.)

I am not one to get upset about these types of things, but Blue Jean was the start of my journey into this music.

I actually can't think of another artist like Bowie.

He is a true original,

Bowie and Elton John are the two most important musicians from the UK who don't belong to a band. Agree?
