Provincial rivalries will definitely help gets butts in seats. I'm going to the game in Edmonton with a few others, and am hoping for a large turnout for the return leg in Calgary.
Also, this was a preseason derby that the two clubs' supporters groups proposed years ago to both clubs. Foothills were interested at the time, but FC Edmonton wanted nothing to do with it. Funny how now that they've lost their NASL club, they're all over it.

To be fair, it's EFC Academy . . . Either way, though, this is the most interest I've had in a PDL game so far, especially living in Edmonton!

Edmonton has already "sold" 1000 tickets to the April 29 leg. Wonder how many folks will show up in Okotoks for the return leg? Tickets are free for both...

What does "sold" mean then? A commitment from people to show up?

Also, got my tickets to the game. Good news too, the entire West side has been filled up - I think I am sitting on the East side, which isn't overly bad but may result in the sun being in my eyes.
I think that's what they mean by "sold out". . . . The West side tickets are all gone.

Is it just show up and rush seating for the 5th or do I have to sign up online saying I’ll be going?

I think the idea is that season ticket holders are emailed a ticket to this game when they purchase seasons. Not really sure how this would work for those who just want to check out the game, couldn't hurt to hit them up on Twitter.

Sunday's game in Edmonton has now "sold" 2500 tickets. I'm checking with the club to see if people who aren't season ticket holders can come to the return leg.

Clarke Stadium, has a capacity of 5000. Entire West side of the stadium is now full. This is amazing.

The club has confirmed that the May 5 game will be open to the public, free admission. Great excuse to check out what they have to offer. Can't let Edmonton outdraw us, can we?

Foothills win 4-0 in the first leg of Al Classico in Edmonton. Goals came from Duwayne Ewart, Ali Musse, Jackson Farmer and Tofa Fakunle. Foothills dominated the play as expected, until a late surge from Edmonton. Stephanie Labbe came on with 10 minutes left and made a fantastic save to keep the clean sheet with a few minutes left to go.
Total attendance was 3205, which is damn good given the weather. Good banter with the Edmonton supporters every time we crossed through their section, and was made easier given the score. It was my first time at Clarke Field, and I'm surprised that NASL was played there, because it feels similar to Hellard Field in what it offers.
Leg 2 is at the Calgary Soccer Centre on Saturday at 2 pm. Admission is free.
Couple photos below, spoilered for size.

I was there! Had a great time. Weather was a bit too cold to enjoy completely, but the action on the field was great, especially since Calgary pounded Edmonton into the ground.
Shermanator: your 2nd photo must have been after half time, because the West side was basically full during the first half.

The second photo was actually taken during warmups, about 40 minutes before kickoff. I was very impressed with the turnout.

Looks like the league won't allow Labbe to play for Foothills.
Quote:
I have given it my best fight and feel myself fitting in, but unfortunately not everyone is as open minded about this situation. After inquiring to the league, The PDL’s initial response was that as per the rules “The PDL is a men’s league” and “given that the PDL is a gender based league, women are ineligible to play”. Other sources have also stated that “because there are women’s professional, Pro-am and amateur equivalents, there is no mechanism to challenge”.
“The club is looking into ways around this to support Steph staying. Based on Steph’s ability, she has shown she can play with us. Whilst this door maybe closed for now, we are looking at other windows of opportunity to stretch Steph’s game. As given the short season length, any appeal would eat into valuable playing time. So whilst we get creative with a solution, the club well and truly considers Steph a part of the team.” - Tommy Wheeldon Jr., Head Coach.

Seems silly frankly. IF you are good enough to play in the league you should play. Gender segregation seems a bit ridiculous.

Are men allowed to play in the NWSL?

Sounds like it was more of a case of we can't allow this girl to show us up. Just make up a fake excuse saying its a men's only league. I see this being no different than Shannon Szabados playing for a men's team or Hayley Wickenheiser playing with men in Europe.
I think the PDL is doing themselves a big disservice by blocking this.

Especially from a marketing perspective, which the PDL sorely needs. They're basically twiddling their thumbs on the side of the road while the brand new Ferrari two feet away with the keys in the ignition collects dust.

FWIW, Labbe was not going to make the squad anyways.
