Big fan of Vladar here, and I really think he showed at times last year that he could take the reins and run with it if given the chance, but like so many other players, the rug was pulled out from underneath him by Sutter. For half the year at least, he looked much better than Markstrom. I know he hasn't proven himself as a starter, but there's a reason why so many teams are rumoured to be sniffing around him this off-season. I think that if he was given the reins, he would be great-even if we have to watch him do it on another team.

I'm a proponent of keeping Wolf in the AHL this season with some NHL starts along the way, and I have more faith in Vladar becoming a bonafide starter than I do in Marky returning to Vezina form. Just my opinion, and I realize I'm going to be roasted....

Vladar has shown nothing during his career that he can be a starter, let alone a quality starter or a starter for a team that wants to make the play-offs.

That isn't on Sutter that is on him. Doesn't mean he sucks but at his age there is no reason to think he is anything more than an ok back-up.

I see Wolf being up and down between the AHL and NHL for a portion of the year, but at some point staying up full time and Vladar is dealt.

Isn't that the ideal scenario?
Why does this have to be fully solved at the start of the season?
Not saying that plan is wrong , but if wolf is playing 20-25 games how many games is vladar playing? They can’t have wolf playing every time it’s the backups turn to play . That’s not fair to vladar. Not to mention who would want him if he’s not playing any nhl games.

For me if he wolf comes to camp and wins the backup job then he should get it. They can trade vladar for a song or put him on waivers for all I care. Also if vladar wins backup job then he deserves the games when it’s the backups night.

Hazek was 27 when he was traded from Chicago to Buffalo. Kiprisoff was 27 when he was traded to the Flames. Tim Thomas was 32 when he became a starter.

I’ll grant you it’s unlikely Vladar’s career trajectory would be the same, but it’s not the foregone conclusion you’re trying to make it.

I think you going to 2 examples of extreme outliers kind of shows the likelihood.

Pretty sure we covered it, but Rob Munnich of Flames Nation wrote an article urging the Flames to make a pitch for the Sens' C Shane Pinto. As we know, the Sens are in a cap crunch, and Pinto needs a raise. I would love this, as SP is 6'2", shoots right, and skates well- the best part is that he's just coming in to his own, and is about to pop.

Great target, but Calgary is in a similar cap crunch.

They couldn’t take on Pinto without sending similar cap back, which then makes no sense for Ottawa.

Very true, unless something happens with one or more of our rumored “tradeables”, and it doesn’t sound like anything is imminent….

A guy can dream.

I considered that, but it would seem that if Lindholm or Hanifin get traded, it is likely to a good team, which pretty mush assures it needs to be a dollar for dollar deal, so will not give much flexibility to the Flames.

At the deadline, those guys could possibly be traded for futures, which will help out the Flames cap situation at that time, but that's not soon enough likely for a Pinto deal.

Plus I'm not sure I want the Flames to trade the kind of prospect required to get a Pinto.

Three way trade, Hanifin to someone else through Ottawa for Pinto.

Goalies develop later than players. Vladar could be a starter for sure. He shows flashes just needs a little more consistency.

As someone who grew up in the 80s this made me laugh. I would worry if he got hit from behind he may explode.

That would be a huge win for the flames. At this point I’m expecting a mid to late 1st and by prospect for hanifin

I think he's in the same group Dube/Sharangovich are.

Pinto is a very good target. His +/- shows a potentialy bad defensive player, but he got unlucky more than anything else. He does have the occasional giveaway in the defensive zone but there weren't that many HD chances against with him on the ice.

His goal scoring is actually in line with his expect goals. That makes me believe he can replicate it again.

As others have mentioned cap space is the main issue. We'd need to free up a spot in our top 9, and the cap space to sign him. I also don't think he'll come cheap, so do you have the appetite to send Zary + to Ottawa? That's why I don't see the fit this season.

I expect other teams could easily beat a "Zary led " offer.

We had a co-worker we nicknamed Pinto. If you struck him in the rear end, he exploded.
