HAH that is hilarious. 3 1sts + in value... arguably the best goalie prospect in the league and one of the best forward prospects in the AHL. Barf worthy

Thought Toronto fans were the worst personally at the "my trash for your superstars" proposals, but that Habs one's definitely a doozy.

The Hockey Writers are speculating that Kasperi Kapanen could be on the block. Seems that he has been in Sullivan's doghouse lately, and his ice time has steadily decreased the last 5 games- 18:07<<15:56<<13:31<<11:01, and down to the 4th line last game against LA with only 8:03 (He played over 16 minutes tonight against WSH). 6'1", plays RW, good skill and speed, only 25 years old.

No I think it’d make more sense for a competitive team to go after Monahan. I just don’t see why a rebuilding team would spend assets acquiring an expensive project that they can hope to maybe rehabilitate only for said player to book it to free agency the season after. It’d be a waste of an asset as Ottawa saw, what did they get from Stepan, one goal? They’re not that same mistake again.
Truth is, we don’t know what Monahan’s exact value is. But to me, it’s a strong possibility that he may need to be bought as discussed on the Fan 960 as well. Could he still be traded for something of value? Absolutely. But we’re also talking about a player who’s sitting last on the team in even strength scoring amongst all full time skaters...and yes, even behind the much maligned Trevor Lewis.
So, even if my take is on the pessimistic side, it’s a very real possibility and management has to be prepared for this scenario.

With a large continuing cap hit extending into next season, it makes no sense whatsoever for a competitive to go after Monny.

You know who could be a sneaky cheap acquisition? Max Domi.
He’s fallen out of favor in Columbus, but he was a pretty elite puck distributor in Montreal. Could be the playmaker that Mangiapane needs to build a more consistent second wave of offense.
UFA this off season with 19 points in 33 games
Had 116 points in 153 games with Montreal. Probably doesn’t cost anything more than a mid round pick

Like both Kasperi Kapanen and Max Domi as targets. Both sneaky good acquisitions that probably won't empty the prospect pool or high draft picks.

I was thinking that Arizona might be a possible landing spot for Monahan in the off season. They need contracts just to get to the floor. They could also play Monahan top line minutes with Keller (Gaudreau lite) and try to rebuild his value before moving him at the deadline.
Monahan probably has Arizona on his 10 team no trade list, then again he might want to go somewhere where he will get prime playing time to up his value in a contract year.
I wonder if we could get Hayton in return, that kid needs a change of scenery badly.

I don’t know that AZ is on a lot of no trade lists. Yeah, they’re bad, but a lot of lists are lifestyle based. Guys who play there love it.

I could see Monahan welcoming a move potentially anywhere next year as he needs to have a good season to get another good deal. If his role is going to be the same in Calgary he is not going to get much term or money on his next contract.
That needs to be the salary that moves to free up the money for extensions.

Arizona has taken a number of bad contracts, but have collected multiple first round picks for doing so.
They aren't giving up a decent prospect while taking on a huge amount of cap. Putting Monny on their top line will cripple whatever amount of creativity exists with Keller et al.

Oh for sure, I guess I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't meaning we would get Hayton for Monahan straight up, we would have to add. That being said Hayton is quickly getting into the bust territory and he doesn't hold the same trade value he once did.

Worry about the offseason when we get there.
I love the idea of acquiring Kapanen. It would mean another RFA contract to balance. Domi is also interesting, but I'd rather find a right hander.
