Dont the Flames already have a big body opposite Gaudreau who is a 20 goal guy?

Anyone listening to Friedman on the Fan right now? It honestly sounds like he's pulling stuff out of thin air, like he feels he has to say something about Calgary but doesn't really have anything.

"You uh.....need a goalie....uh...maybe a depth defenseman...uh...."

Weird.

Friedman on 960:

Flames looking for a winger and maybe depth d-man
Doesn't think they are going to move Gillies anymore with Smith injury. They need goalie depth.
Also said they might have been looking for a goalie, but implied that with Rittich's solid play has made this less of a priority.
Flames don't want to move their top prospects like Andersson, Fox.

Stafford went for a 6th round pick last year - similar deal is what the Flames may look at.
Wonders if the Flames look at Vanek.

The Flames and Vanek would be an unlikely marriage but man I feel like it'd work well.

Cross fingers Dim Jim would think Boeser is Vanek.

Boomer has already stated that the Flames brass have zero interest in Vanek. Intimated that they don't like him in the slightest.

Friedman saying the Flames aren't looking for a goalie, but need depth. Don't want to move Andersson but are looking for depth on defense. Just weird contradictory stuff this morning.

Defensive depth doesn't make much sense to me. We have four guys that could be #7's.

Stone and Brodie could both move up a pairing and we'd be fine as well.

Almost all playoff teams want depth defencemen at the deadline. Playoffs are a grind and losing a dman or two during some gruelling series can happen. If playoffs started tomorrow and one of our d men went down we are looking at Bartowski for the remainder of playoffs . Sure there is Anderson but most coaches go with experience over youth during playoffs.

The comment on Gillies suggests that, while Smith is not as badly hurt as we all feared, the brass isn't 100% on his durability for the rest of the season and POs.

I think Treliving is looking for a winger for the third line, to push Hathaway to the fourth. Hathaway has done admirably there for the most part, but a player with more offence could really round out the scoring on each line. Alternatively, a good two way guy to complement Backlund and Frolik could put Tkachuk on that Jankowski, line which would make the Flames really tough to match up against.

Won’t Versteeg push Hathaway down the lineup?

I can understand the idea of looking at depth defensemen. If Bartkowski is your #7 right now, might need an upgrade or the alternative is to play a rookie into the lineup in one of the kids from the farm which might not be ideal for the playoffs.

When he comes back I would put versteeg with Backlunds line and tkachuk on the Janko line, thus making it the tkachuk line.

Unless flames somehow get a legit top 6 winger like a Hoffman , I wouldn't bother wasting assets on wingers. I also highly doubt flames will be able to get a top 6 winger at deadline prices.

Did people watch Versteeg before he got hurt?

He will help the PP, but I don't see him pushing too many people down the lineup 5-on-5. He was a 4th liner before he got hurt

We need Grabner just to hit the empty nets. I would actually prefer this team do nothing rather than trade a 5th round pick for a guy equal to Versteeg that may or not improve this team.

He was on 4th line because flames kept hoping Jagr would get going. Granted it's been so long that timeline might not mesh up

If Vanek only costs chump change, I'd consider doing it.

Grabner would be in the sweet spot for them though, IMO, for what the player brings vs cost.
