I would welcome him being a Flame for a while longer. Just a really good all around defender.

Defensemen that can skate typically age well so I would be totally on board with Conny giving him an 8 year deal.

I am not expecting him to sign but Hanifin and Lindholm are the only UFAs I want the Flames to sign given that they won't rebuild. Trade the rest

Of the prospective and current long contracts, Hanifin is the only one that does not give me any concern.
If it’s the right decision to sign the player, you sign him. The mistake of signing a couple forwards long term should not weigh into it.

Other than the comment today about the door still being open to re-sign if he likes the direction of the team, has Hanifin been on record saying anything else regarding wanting to move on? It seems like Hanifin's supposed intentions were something reported by one reporter and it just kind of got repeated by other soruces and took on a life of it's own.

He was one of the few who stated on garbage bag day that he was willing to stay, and he some of his comments really made him a attractive piece to keep about its time for players like him and that age group to grab ahold of the team and become bigger leaders.
I think Hanifin is a really underrated player he is a top skater in the league, he has more offensive potential to unlock, and yeah he has some blunders that end up in the net but they are few and what defenseman doesn't make mistakes?
He is a legitimate top pairing defenseman.

Maybe the Flames told Hanifin what the offers were for him and it was a bit of a wake-up call.

It could be. The low offers problem stem from the idea that he is set on leaving and the Flames are desperate to trade him, so he better give the notion that he might be willing to stay in order to raise the offers.

I think the low offers stem from the fact that he hasn’t wanted to engage potential suitors in extension talks, wanting to test UFA.
That makes him a rental, and lowers his potential value until, perhaps, the trade deadline.

It was also an awful offseason for trade value in general

Yeah for sure. But demand for his services is certainly going to be of interest to him. For all we know, Hanifin's agent gave the Flames permission to share parameters of his contract demands with potential trade partners.

I have little to no interest in retaining Hanifin. He never stepped it up in the playoffs, and we need to start allocating more money for either retaining Lindholm (if that door remains to be open) or money for future raises, like Wolf, Andersson, Coronato, etc. Would rather have Zadorov and Kylington split 4/5 time with #3 Tanev. Find a trade partner that can give us a young stud prospect with promise and hasn't broken out yet.

I would be okay if Hanifin wanted to re-sign. He would be the most comfortable of the pending UFA’s I would want the Flames to give 8 years but he has also been the guy who was least likely to do that. I still don’t buy he is really interested in staying I think he said the right thing to the media as that gives Conroy a small amount of leverage in trade talks which hopefully gets him to his new team sooner.

Watching Hanifin in the last half of last season I would be stoked if he was retained. Whoever signs him to his next contract is going to see a pop in offensive play driving in my mind.
He'll never be dominant with his shot, but he was noticeable in keeping sustained pressure alive using his boots and outside speed in the first few months of 2023 (in my mind).

What do we record Hanifin's next contract will be? 8Mx7?

Maybe. They could point to Nurse as a comparable as they have similar stats over the past few seasons.

It's hard to believe there is a weak trade market for a young defenseman with his potential. You get one year at less than $5 MM AAV and first crack at signing him to a long term deal through his prime years.

Winning teams have a solid pairing D with continuity.
Andersson and hanafin have always been a solid pairing, similar age and continue to grow together.
Rather resign hanafin then Lindholm.
