It would make zero sense for the team or fans/media to speculate on right now. He is an unknown at this point. Could be anywhere from "can't contribute better than 12 forwards and rides the pine/starts in the minors" to "the surgery and recovery are going well and they want to try him in the top 9 to see best fit".
Total wildcard. But make no mistake - The Habs took him on for the 1st round pick, not because they saw potential, they saw the same unknown that the Flames saw after some difficult years of injuries with yet another off season surgery.
I really hope he comes back strong and snags a full time spot, though.

A whippersnapper yourself, I see. Well, well, one must make allowance for children.
When Howe broke into the NHL, he wore #17. But teams travelled by train in those days, in Pullman sleeping cars, and it was an ironclad rule that they took their berths in numerical order. The lower berths were the most desirable, so they went to the guys with the smallest numbers. (This is one reason why all starting goalies wore #1 in those days. They played every game and couldn't chance insomnia, and the whole team knew it.)
So when a single-digit number became available, Howe dropped #17 and switched to 9. That got him a lower berth and helped him sleep better on the road.
All these spoilt young pups travelling in their fancy airy-o-planes and such! It's not even an overnight trip. No wonder they don't care about having the right numbers anymore. Nothing's sacred. I bet they didn't even have to walk 30 miles to school, uphill both ways, in a blizzard, in July! What will become of the human race?
Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go yell at some clouds and shake my cane at the kids on my lawn.

Well if Monahan ever had a chance at having a comeback after his 2 surgeries, it's by being traded and making us Flames fans wonder "what if".

This is some kind of Marvel bizzaro multi-verse of Monahans.

There will be a stark difference in how Monahan is treated vs. Gaudreau upon both of their return to Calgary.

You think? Lol
Interesting that Tkachuk and Monahan make their returns in consecutive games, I don’t think Tkachuk will get as bad of a reception as gaudreau does but it’ll still be interesting to see the difference between the response from the fans for Tkachuk and Monahan with their returns being so close together

Left as UFA after rejecting offer v. Traded after rejecting contract v. Traded to give team cap room. Of course Monahan will be well received.

Thing is, the Flames know his MO and won’t bite. Which will drive him crazy.
