Karen Muncey, CEO of Dynamic Edge Sports Vision Training, a company that works with athletes to improve visual skills such as peripheral awareness and hand-eye coordination, said it’s logical that white pads would be an advantage over darker ones.
“It all goes back to that fact that if you’re presenting a dark outline, it gives (scorers) a much better place to not shoot,” she said. “If the pads are dark, they’re going to aim at the holes. So if you present them with a white pad or a little bit of a grey line that mimics the net behind them, with that fast rush up they have much less time to concentrate on the five-hole or other holes that are being presented.”

These are well thought out theories that merit testing, but I'm not seeing any evidence presented here that these claims have any substance to them. Fleury's case presents one data point, but it's anecdotal and the improved numbers could be due to a thousand different factors, not necessarily white pads. As others have said, superstition may give the goaltender a psychological edge, but that's also purely speculation.
You provided some good quotes, but you failed to post the most important part of that article:
Quote:
“If somebody can prove to me that 20 per cent less goals are scored because they wear white pads, then it’s something to look into,” he said. “But I think changing rules without facts, it’s not right. It’s just an opinion right now.”
|
You presented this idea as a fact, but it's clearly not. At least not yet.

It's a similar concept as why stick tape is white (cannot see the angle of the stick well prior to the shot) or black (cannot see the position of the puck on the stick well).
Who knows if there's any validity to it or not, but most of us here have played hockey and I don't think anybody thinks that colour camouflage in hockey is actually a critical component to the game, despite possible modest benefits. As pointed out, many famous and successful goalies certainly aren't convinced.
However, a photo of Roy's pads do actually use this camouflage, by making the five hole look bigger than it actually is. As a layperson, this looks to me almost more effective than all white pads.

I agree about these pads. If you want to confuse the eyes, have lines and shapes that are different than what is expected. Also, the contrast of the black and the white helps make the white less visible.
I don't really have a dog in this fight, but if I were a goalie I would go with pads like these - dark on the 'outside' with a white, non-symmetrical inner portion.

When I was very much younger, I had white tape with a black rectangle in the middle (in felt pen). In my goofed up head I thought it would fool goalies into thinking the puck was on my stick after I passed or shot. What an idiot.

To be fair, that photo is so washed out and contrasted it doesn't give an accurate representation of how difficult it is to see.
Really though, the game is played on a surface that is 95% white. It's also played at such a speed that shooters don't possibly have time to line up their shots the way we're imagining. Shooters look for lanes. They know where the net is, they know what they can do, and they know they have less than a second before they're either attacked or the goalie is set. At that point, it's muscle memory. Not the eyes sending a message to the brain which evaluates, makes a decision based on pad color, sends a signal to the hands, and then shoots.

When JS Giguere won the Conn Smythe, he was dressed like this.
Meanwhile, one half of our tire fire goalie tandem spent most of three years wearing these.
Tim Thomas wore white when he threw up a .940 save % and won the Conn Smythe but I'll not let something that undermines my argument prevent me from posting this.
Good goalies stop the puck. If they prefer white and that gets them through the day, fine. But any benefits gained are psychological on behalf of the goalie. White pads are not making Tyler Seguin's life more difficult.

That last set of Roy pads sure make his 5 hole look much larger than it really is.

Much of the reason for that is the quality of the picture. The image is overexposed and the whites are all washed out.

FWIW: Chad Johnson has never played at the Honda Center, but his one game vs. Anaheim this year was a 44-save shutout.
