Agree 199% on comments regarding Hickey.....the guy is a machine and other than E2 was my "best" player on the ice.
E2 was worth the drive across town alone! I also love that he had a big smile on his face every time the whistle stopped play! He obviously loves being out there and he was not the least bit intimidated by the whole first time experience of being at the Camp. At this moment I find it hard to believe we "stole him" in the late rounds.
I also agree for the most part on comments about Killington...it seems it's too easy for him and at times and he goes into blow up mode when he tries to do too much!
Love Parsons too.....incredibly athletic which allows him to cover the net better than all the other Goaltenders out there today IMHO!

The real assessment are the preseason games, where you have at least some definite NHL caliber folks in the mix, and the potential of being cut the next day are a driving force for the young guys, in some cases even the vets.

It's exciting to watch the kids and see how the look, especially as we are getting into the summer and that hockey craving is kicking back in after the draft/july 1st, but hints of injuries, a guy looking out of breath, a big play here, or lack of noticable play can't really be used to evaluate anything just yet.
With anything, it's just a snapshot of what's going on at that point. Some players have great Dev camps and that's it. Some have good Penticton tourneys and that's it (Ortio...).

Most of these guys this week are not going to play in the NHL this season. The only guys that are more likely to are Janko, Tkachuk, Kylington, and Gillies. We won't be able to determine who is up to snuff really until December/January as players sort themselves out.

If a player does good in this tourney like AOM, that's great. You've cleared this bar. Now go out there and have a good camp. If they continue to clear bars, they are on their way. Morrison for example had a good end of season and cleared that bar. Then he had a good dev camp, and cleared that bar. Then he completely vanished at the dinos game/penticton, and in Stockton for most of last year. Just because one has a good section doesn't mean that will continue in a linear way because development rarely is a linear process.

Just have to keep checking in with everyone to see how things are from time to time. This camp is one of those check ins.

its definitely a red flag for Rasmus though. It's crazy how someone has the potential to make millions off a sport and you can't get your fitness in order ? it seem silly.
I watched Raz a lot today (and yesterday) and I'll agree he doesn't look in game shape. That said he is a helluva player, controls the play when he has the puck, rarely doesn't hit the tape with a pass and can clear his zone with ease!
The guy has been one of the best D man in the OHL for the last 2 seasons.....and I for one have no angst about whether his fitness habits (at this stage of his career) will side track him....

Gillies apparently didn't get the memo about the dress code.

In case you didn't realize that goalie is a big man's position now, Colin Zulianello (the new goalie coach for Stockton) is the guy with the beard... He's 6'2".

Tod Button on 960

http://www.sportsnet.ca/960/the-big-...tton-big-show/

Summary:

it went awesome! Hockey in July, what could be better than that?

tries to watch the kids who finished their first year pro to see how much they progressed

2 guys on their draft list that they invited - Brayden Burke and Mathieu Sevigny
Brayden is a guy skilled guy put up 107 points
Matthew is a gritty energy type player who is physically underdeveloped
bringing Burke and Sevigny to Penticton to see how much progress they made from now to training camp

after rookie camp and Penticton, his staff's attention turns to the next draft classes
really up to the development staff after they are drafted but stays in contact
talks a lot about the development process, how they develop plans and how his staff supports the development staff

new coaching staff doesn't impact him in any way
coaches and amateur scouting staff don't really interact but they might ask what they need to know about a specific player but is pretty rare

on late round picks and how they came one their radar (e.g. Tuulola and Phillips)
it is just the process they go over on the year
the common fan knows about the top guys like Tkachuk - they can go watch the memorial cup
the guys like Phillips and Tuulola - there isn't as much exposure so there is a uniqueness to the fans
the initial process of identifying players is important so that you can allocate your resources and not end up chasing your tail throughout the year

why Falkovsky wasn't at camp:
thinks it was a Belorussian issue thats why he wasn't there
their administrator sent out an e-mail saying he wan't going to be there
pretty sure it was a visa issue but not 100% sure

on 2017 draft
knows the top 10 or 12 players very well
good mix of skill and size
Nolan Patrick has been on our radar for 2-3 years
Liljegren is a quarterback on the PP at 16 in Sweden
couple of Finns that they like
it looks like a good 10 or 12 but will probably go deeper than that
likes Comptois from Victoriaville
kids are getting bigger and are just skilled
there are 3 or 4 good Swedes - mentions Lilas Andersson
some Russians too will be travelling all over the world for this draft

Going to guess he just meet them at the top via the gondola. Didn't get his new under armour kit dirty because of his hip.

The flip flops kinda give away that he didn't do the hike haha

I think so. I don't know what Schneider and Rittich look like, so it could be the other way around, but the guy between Gillies and Parsons looks like an Eastern European.

Yeah, I assume that's what happened. I can't imagine he climbed the mountain in flip flops ... but he is a goalie, and goalies are weird.

Highly possible he did. If you look closely you can see a small bandaid on the inner part of Gillies' left ear.

I'm basing my concerns on the fact that the Flames brass themselves have called it out for the 2nd straight year. Poor conditioning or lack of willingness to commit has doomed many a prospect.

So with E2, I think it's pretty clear we ended up with the best Finn in the draft.

Amirite?
