Lol most airports use light rail transit to go from terminal to terminal, Calgary uses a golf cart.

As amateur as it looks, I do moan every time I have to walk to the edge of a terminal to get to a tram/monorail to the edge of another terminal where I have to walk another mini-marathon to my gate/customs/luggage.

Compared to other airports our existing piers won't be that far from each other from end to end. It is still a good distance though and I'm sure this was a pretty economical option for right now. I'd guess if demand warranted it the airport could always put in a rail system above the departures level connecting the two terminals and their piers together.

We don't need a monorail. I hate those things.

Isn't the operating expense of having to hire 12 or so drivers to run these carts going to add up over time vs a more efficient solution (ie automation or a single driver for a train)
That and I see unwitting people walking down the "empty hallway" that should be reserved for carts and totally slowing everything down.

If it's used like it is in other airports I've seen, isn't it driven around by staff who actually need to go some where and they pick up people (usually elderly or those who might have a hard time walking long distances) on their way?
As long as they put in those moving walkway things, the distance will be fine for an average person. The airport is still pretty small.
NVM: Just saw the video on the other page.

Cool shot of the entire airport with the new terminal. Are there any plans of at least painting or tiling the old terminal white to match?

Speaking of re-facing the old terminal, what is the plan for pier B/C once US and International traffic move out? Convert for regional aircraft like Encore and Express?

I thought the old runway (35L, 17R) was to close after the new one opened for resurfacing. Is that still in the works? I can no longer find a reference to it.

The original plan was much more than just a resurfacing. I believe they were planning a full overhaul that would make it identical to the new runway, with inset LED lighting and all that. The closure would have been for a full year. I remember some of the ATC guys talking about it, saying just as they get parallels in YYC they lose it for a whole year!
I believe it did get put off now, and there is not hard timeline for it.

Funny tidbit: A photo of the Calgary airport made an appearance on The Daily Show the other night.
They were talking about the Trump muslim ban and what it would be like at a border crossing. Interesting that they used a photo of a Canadian airport as a backdrop.

I have heard rumours that the new terminal will encourage people to wander around and shop. To that end, you won't even know your gate number until very close to boarding, they'll likely announce it, it won't be printed on your ticket. Can anyone in the know confirm this?

Correct, they are doing a "Call to Gate" system. So you go through security and then on the secure side they'll have a central area (one each for USA and International flights) with all the shops and services, then at a certain time before your flight they announce the gate it will be departing from.
Not sure I'm a fan of it, but it would be pretty easy to figure out your gate I think for certain flights/airlines if you wanted to settle in at the gate area.

What a stupid system!! When I get there, I want to know where I'm going, not wait around hoping to hear an announcement. Half the time, you can't hear them anyway and I certainly wouldn't be shopping while I wait and try to hear where I am supposed to go.

I wouldn't worry too much about not hearing PA calls, I believe there will also be plenty of screens around showing the flights and the gate to go to.
But like I said, if you are flying on some of our international flights it's not like there are a huge amount. You'd be able to figure out your gate pretty quick. Flying KLM? Go look for the big blue bird, etc.
Also of note is that in the lead up to the new terminal opening the airport authority will be conducting trials to simulate operations. They'll need people to sign up for these trials and do different tasks to simulate the place up and running, so they can make changes and tweaks before opening. Monitor this website for more details:

Oh, okay, if there are screens too, that's fine. I thought it was only going to be announcements. And I've spent way too much time running around airports, with the screen only guiding me to where I was going, with no time to stand around listening to announcements (I may have been slightly traumatized by an experience in Frankfurt this past summer).

Why do people go to the gate before boarding time anyways? It's like people have this weird obsession with getting on the plane ASAP. Samething with the lineups for boarding. Planes not going to leave without you. Calm your ####.
If I trusted myself to hear a PA announcement, I'd wait until they called my name to board. Zero rush to get in the uncomfortable seat that I will be stuck in for the next few hours.
