It appears they lose about 2,400 lower bowl seats in the conversion from the basketball to hockey configurations. If they sold the upper deck obstructed view seats, they could potentially fit 16,000 in the building.
They could put some seating at ice level in the corners (similar to what the Isles did at Barclays) to add a few hundred seats.
Bettman said there's a plan to get 17,000 unobstructed seats into the building, but I don't know how they can pull that off.

If they can't get proper seating in the corners I hope they pull an IIHF and just stick some cars in the vacant space.
Mereulo: "We can make it work here. Now that I know how it works, we can make it work"
One of the most inciteful interviews i have seen with Bettman. Of course we get the transactional, combative Bettman. No contrition nor empathy for fans.
Bettman is interesting. The boss that answers to owners. Or at least some owners. Depending on who the owner he sits next to, his demeanor changes. Here the body language between these two is fascinating. Meruelo is a beaten dog next to his owner. Bettman waves his hand to cut him off if annoyed enough. Minute 28 is interesting. And so is 41:45. Repulsed.

So technically, Utah is a new franchise that has purchased the contracts of the players and hockey operations management.
Phoenix is a dormant franchise retaining the name and trademarks.
If and when Muerelo fails to secure an arena, what's to stop Houston interests from buying all rights to the franchise, moving them and calling them the Coyotes?

One of the stories I read mentioned that his rights to the franchise are non-transferrable. He can't even sell off a minority stake.
Since reactivating the franchise will still require him to pay the league a billion dollars, I don't know why anyone would even want to buy the trademarks. The Coyotes brand is toxic at this point.

The Meruelo Coyotes brand is toxic, but I have a hard time thinking the nostalgia for the Coyotes branding won't be roughly on par with the Whalers and Nordiques within five years. Heck, it was already strong before they brought it back. People are all about the Kachina jerseys.

After watching the presser at the two points above it’s quite that dynamic. Seems like the owner thinks he has a deal in place to bring back the franchise but all the stars have to align. I truly think he’s seen as a toxic commodity and you can see that from how everyone has treated him here. He may have the rights but I guarantee you people behind the scenes aren’t helping him. When his five year window runs out his rights go out the window and they’ll relocate there with a new owner only once a new owner finally builds a rink. So my guess is nobody will give him the time of day from the city for five years, and no support from the nhl, then a new owner comes in at year five or I so with a proposition to build, it gets done in three years and in 2032 they expand there. Bettman is doing what he needs to appease and get the sign off done to rid himself of this guy but knows his word means nothing as he has no respect from anyone. He can probably keep the franchise name as they’re indifferent if it comes back as Coyotes or otherwise.
