Complaining about Nylander being soft is like complaining about Gaudreau being soft. Going into the corners with guys twice their size would be dumb, and would result in injuries. They pick their spots, and produce offence. That’s their job. They don’t play like Eric Lindros for obvious reasons. It’s not “effort” or “heart”. It’s physical limitations.

A lot of players that are 6' tall play physical. With Nylander it isn't physical limitations, it's style of play (which is fine).

To play devil's advocate Nylander is listed at 6' 204lbs. Not sure if you realized that.

As has been pointed out, Nylander is not a small guy.
He is a finesse and perimeter player, but that is by choice, not because he can't compete physically.
Super talented dude for sure, but not in any way a Gaudreau comparable in terms of size.

How many D men is he going into corners with who are smaller than that? I know his weight is pretty high despite how he appears. He’s pretty jacked. But he’s small framed. And as mentioned of course play style plays a part of that, but he’s not putting himself or your team in a better position by going into the corner and getting levelled. He stops up a lot, like Johnny did. Pretty much every leaf fan I know hates him for it.

I see you are doubling down, but size isnt an issue for him. Which was the point in your OP. It's fine if he plays a non physical finesse game, but its not an issue with size like Johnny.

A Colorado 1st round pick is going to be pretty low meaning it is likely they are years away from contributing if you hit on a player at all. I'd be more inclined to go after players that have a couple years of development under their belts and you are more sure of what you have. Even if they were 2nd or 3rd round picks but look like they are going to play and contribute in short order I would rather have that asset. First round picks are so over-valued. Unless they are the first 6-10 picks you're rolling the dice.

The Avs brought in Manson because they thought their d-corps lacked bite and were getting pushed around in the previous playoffs. I doubt they see Hanifin as a replacement if Manson is out long term.

Well, if they were playing, say, the Avs, he's bigger than Makar, Girard, Byram, and an inch shorter but heavier than Toews.
OTOH, if they play Vegas he's smaller than all their D (but most players are).

Zadorov is a better fit then?

You can be small and not at all physically, but still go into the corners and in front of the net and win puck battles. That’s why I loved Johnny-he played a “soft” style but still had the competitive edge to win those battles with stealth, smarts, and fantastic use of his stick. As an offensive player, you still need possession of the puck if you want to create anything.

No way I trade Zadorov to Colorado. The Flames need to keep big Z.

Why do they need to do that? When did Z become irreplaceable for the Flames?
When you compare Z to the top 4, he was deployed against weaker competition yet he still allowed the highest amount of HD shot attempts against / 60.
Tanev 1.79
Gilbert 2.05
Weegar 2.24
Andersson 2.4
Hanifin 2.44
Stone 2.45
Zadorov 2.57
Z did well at limiting regular shot attempts, in fact he was one of the best D on the team at it, however that roller coaster with him on the ice makes me think he's expandable. How much did we really miss Gudbranson last year?

When did Gudbranson ever score 14? Z has a better shot than most realize, he just didn't use it much since his days in London. You need a big hard hitting D man on your blueline if you want to go deep in the playoffs.

After the Hatty he got in the final game of the season I kinda wanna see Zad out of the gate here before thinking of trading him. I think he could put up 20 goals if he utilized his blast more often as dissentowner eluded to and you can’t go wrong with that kinda size in your D core. A 4 year extension would be ideal but even if it was a 5 year deal I’d be happy.

I wouldn't bet on Z scoring 14 next season, his career average is probably around 5. He didn't score 14 goals by accident, but I wouldn't pencil in over 7 goals next season. 3 of those were a hattrick in the last game of the season, 5 of his goals came in the last 6 games in April. IMO Z is the highest regression candidate under Huska, but I hope I'm wrong.
I don't think that big hard hitting D are necessarily the ones that help you go deep in the playoffs. It's a combination of D like Makar/Hedman with the likes of Toews/Sergachev that make the difference. Did Sarich help us win a round in the playoffs? Did Derek Engelland help the Flames much?
I'm not suggesting that you should trade Z at all costs, but he's not an untouchable either. I think he's gone at the end of the year regardless of what happens, despite saying all the right things in the media. If the Flames could somehow get a 2nd round pick for him, I think it would be a net gain.

He’s already been there as well. They might not want him back or visa versa.

Big Z is a fun player to have on the team, but c'mon. "need to keep big Z"? What team needs to keep a player like that?
The Flames need to draft a Nathan Mackinnon. The Flames need to draft a Victor Hedman. The Flames need to draft a Jack Eichel.
The Flames need a big Z?

A player like that? Every team.
Not sure what Jack Eichel has to do with the type of player you need playing on the bottom half of your defense.

Zadorov is a good player to have and the Flames need what he brings even though he is a complimentary piece. IMO the Flames actually need one or two players more like him who bring sandpaper and are tough to play against.
