Could think of a ton of scenarios where this could happen. Hoffman to Florida via San Jose style.

He's from Ontario, so he'd accept a trade there.
But that would put Edmonton way over the cap, especially because the cap hit for Nylander is $10.3M this year. And Edmonton would need a backup. Al Montoya makes over $1M. That certainly doesn't help.

You are correct, there isn't enough LTIR from Sekara to make up the difference between this year's cap hits for Talbot and Nylander. Plus, Sekara looks ready to return, but they are having difficulty finding the cap space to make this happen.

On Zuccarello...
Any team would be lucky to get a character guy like Mats Zuccarello, but only one will be adding Mats for their playoff run...And right now this looks like it is a two, or maybe three team race... Calgary and Dallas are scouting Mats the most, with Vegas keeping tabs, but it appears the Knights are looking in another direction. Personally, I think he would be the absolute perfect fit for Calgary...Calgary is already a contender, but this could put them over the top...

Plus you have to add $1M for Al Montoya to come up and play backup.

Agreed, there's no way the Oilers can do this unless the Leafs are taking back dead cap space. Speaking of which, why on earth would the Buds want to do such a silly trade?

No way the Leafs do that. The Oilers would have to add.
And the Oilers can't do that without sending salary back the other way, which the Leafs wouldn't be very keen on, so the Oilers would have to add more to make the Leafs want to.
I don't see any way the Oilers can afford to acquire Nylander from Toronto.

Conroy talks about the deadline plans: https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/pinder-...-willing-give/
The Flames are not likely to be big buyers because they don't want to mess up the chemistry in the room. They're looking to make smaller deals for rentals.
They will not be trading a first rounder for a rental. If a first gets moved, it will be for someone signed long-term.
He compares the moves that were made in 2004 (small deals) to the Jokinen trade in 2009 and says that we're more-likely to see them do the smaller deals that we saw in 2004.

Love Connie, but saying chemistry is what messed up that ‘09 team is forgetting the devastating number of injuries that team was hit with in the last 1/4 of the season and into the playoffs.

Makes sense. There's going to be a bunch of options out there that the Flames can buy low on. I trust tree to do the thing.

We were good enough to make a deep run had it not been for those injuries. Such a deep team

To an extent you are right but to an extent he's right. Lombardi was a massive part of the secondary core as guys like Backlund, Jankowski, Frolik, and Bennett are right now. Replacing Lombardi with a "top 6" guy in Jokinen depleted the elements Lombardi brought.

This article makes a compelling argument for acquiring Andre Burakovsky. It says the Capitals would be looking for a "veteran, top-nine piece".
The names that come to mind, which the Flames would be willing to send back and which could possibly qualify:
-Michael Frolik
-James Neal
I think James Neal would be an absolute non-starter because he has had such a putrid season and is signed to such a big contract. But I wonder about Frolik. I think it's at least worth the call. Frolik is a good player.

No trading Neal. It's never going to happen.

Taking a while to get to 5000
|
Also, why would you want to trade Neal before seeing what happens in the playoffs? Yeah he's underwhelmed thus far, but the whole point of getting him was to have him for a playoff run. Let's see what happens.

He is 31 years old and he will be 32 years old before next season. His contract is for four more seasons at $5.75M. If the Capitals were to go insane and offer the Flames Burakovsky in exchange for Neal, I think that would be a great move regardless of not seeing him in the playoffs.

But why though? Frolik is better currently at this stage of their careers and Burakovsky has never played a full season due to injuries. Our left wing is as good or better with out him.
