Yesterday & Today is grinding my gears.
Yesterday:
My dad collapsed and was taken to the ER yesterday. Spent all day there and was released at 6pm. Turns out he had an ATI (mini-stroke) but has no deficits. Was referred to the Stroke Clinic.
Today:
Arguing with my dad on why he needs to follow up with the Stroke Clinic.
Typing that felt cathartic.

Helping parents with health issues can be brutal. Just know that you are doing the right thing by trying to help.

To be fair, for this one, the long covid is making them have issues figuring it out himself. He needs step by step instructions and then he sorts it out from there.

My dad fights me and my mom on #### like this too. But get my wife to have a short chat with him and he'll do it. Are you able to effectively attempt to use this type of strategy as well?

I'm curious about this now. GMG I keep forgetting to go to Timmies and and pick up a few packs. I bet they'll be sold out by the time I actually go.

I'm fairly certain my mom had a mini-stroke a few months back. Unfortunately I live far away, but my sister was trying to convince her to go to the ER. After much cajoling she agreed to see her family doctor. So off they went. The family doctor took one look and told her to go the ER.
She's also fallen a couple of times and has absolutely refused to get checked out for balance issues. It doesn't help that her doctor is extremely passive about having her checked out.

First, I’m sorry to hear this and I hope my comments here are helpful. So, I would have your sister watch this very carefully. My mom had a stroke a few years ago and it was minor. She also had some balance issues. Literally three years ago, she seemed basically normal, and could live on her own and everything. She wasn’t able to drive, and that was tough because her independence was huge, but she made it work. Fast forward to now, and she’s in long-term care. We had no idea how fast things would decline. But, she’s obviously had more mini strokes or events and multiple falls and issues. Frankly, it was terrifying and very difficult to deal with.
I really hope that’s not the case for your mom and that things are much easier. I just wanted to post this to say that you guys will want to keep a close watch on things, from my purely anecdotal experience. If you have questions or anything, feel free to reach out. I feel like we’ve learned quite a bit from going through this.

The worst. Just the worst.
I will never understand people who are like: "I just want a Canadian Team to win!"
Are people insane??
Could you imagine how insufferable a team would be if they won? I want a Canadian team to win too....the Calgary Flames...and nobody else.

I applaud your effort to help your Dad, and agree you should encourage him to attend the Stroke Clinic. Their assessment of his condition is important.
I appreciate that helping elderly parents can be quite frustrating. I would suggest educating yourself as much as you can about TIAs, and sharing that knowledge with your Dad. Also, I think it's important to validate your Dad's feelings. Usually when a person suffers an extreme health event like a heart attack or stroke, they go through a period of grief.
I know older people can be quite stubborn. However, they are fighting to preserve as much independence as they can, and how fast they learn to accept their diminishing faculties can take some time.
Growing old is not for the faint of heart.

Well this is ####ing annoying. I have a rental car because one of mine is being repaired, and I have a rental from Enterprise. The rental they gave me has a check engine light as of this morning and is idling kind of rough, which is weird because it's a brand new vehicle.
I call the location to ask them what they want me to do and the guy says "well, the person who would decide that isn't here right now, so I'll get ahold of him and call you back". I wait for an hour, no call back, so I call them back... and they're closed now. So I call another location. Eventually I get through to a human and they say what I should do is call the Airport location, since they have the most vehicles and are best placed to help me. I call the Airport location. The phone just rings for about 5 minutes straight, followed by someone picking up and hanging up the phone.
How is this acceptable practice for a business? What do you guys want me to do, drive this thing with the check engine light on until it potentially just breaks down on the side of Deerfoot? ####ing hell.

Customer service is terrible. Some of it is staffing related, but it's gotten almost comical. I went to go pickup food the other day. Get to the restaurant, there's a sign asking for pickup people to call a number and they will bring it out to you.
I call the number and wait a couple of minutes, and then someone comes on and asks if I can hold. I say sure, and I continue to hold while standing outside.
After 12 minutes of being on hold, I tell myself this is stupid, and go inside the restaurant. After a minute or so, a waitress spots me and asks if I need anything, so i tell her that I'm picking up food.
She tells me that I'm supposed to call the number. and wait outside. I still have my phone to my ear listening to the music. I told her I've been on hold for over 12 minutes, and she gets mad at me and tells me that's the procedure!

Customer service is a joke for sure, but people need to start rewarding poor customer service with never stepping foot in those places ever again. And also, telling them that.

I've now had multiple instances of the airport location just picking up and hanging up the phone. I'm not sure if it just auto-hangs up after a while. I called back the other location to ask them if they had some method of getting ahold of someone there and they said "oh yeah they're very busy they never pick up the phone, you'll have to just drive there." So now apparently I need to waste an hour of my time on this because their vehicle is busted and just hope that they can help me - no doubt after waiting for a bunch of time in a lineup behind people who have just gotten off their flights?
I think not.

I don't know how far from the airport you are but if it isn't too long of a drive just go over there, drive the vehicle to the return area and tell them you are swapping for a different vehicle. I have done it before with National/Enterprise and they are very accommodating (or at least they have been with me but I'm an Executive Elite member in their program.)

As ridiculous as it is that a gas cap can cause a check engine light, yup, I did.

Vehicles are so “smart” now, they’ve gone full circle to being stupid. Had a check engine warning go off and the truck went into low power (limp mode) last year about 40mins into trip to Fernie with the trailer. Limped back home, unhooked, drove to the shop and they checked the code. Bad coolant sensor, 5 days for a new one (can’t replace the sensor, it’s integrated with the tank) and it will stay in limp mode till it’s replaced. Weekend over? While at the shop I googled it and all I had to do is twist the level gauge 1/4 turn to drop it out of position and everything goes back to normal. Asked the technician what the risks are and they said nothing, but I wouldn’t know if my coolant is low…. unless I check it from time to time. You mean pop the hood and look at that big tank with a min/max line? Fk me. 2 second fix and trip was back on.

I live right off the Mile, you should see Trolley on Greaser game night. They even have their staff in blue Oilers, McDavid t shirts (not to single them out as I'm sure many sports bars are doing this. But they're the closest to me). It's so gross. Love that place but I refuse to go during this stint.
And I'm sure there's some Calgarians who have temporarily jumped ship in the name of "Canada/Alberta", but I think it's more Eastern transplants and a swath of ex Greasetonians/Northern Albertans living here who are the most at fault. It's amazing how many escaped their Greasetown roots to come to greener pastures down here. Not that I blame them...
