We are no Ukrainians that's for sure. Not enough push back so far. We'll see what happens in the evening and Saturday though.

Somebody is going to take out Putin and “withdraw” to pre-war borders.
This person will then be hailed as a “hero”, and the Russian redemption tour can begin. Again.
They, or their successor eventually become the new Putin, since it’s always the same dudes in charge.
Some things never change.

Millions of people fleeing the country, yet protests were only in the tens of thousands.
It's effing pathetic.

I know it's easy for us armchair generals to say this but ultimately it's the truth; the lack of opposition to the Russian war and support for the war prior to the mobilization announcement has led us to this point. This is what happens when people get complacent and let their government walk all over them.
Ultimately it's the Ukrainians who paid the biggest price for this lack of opposition, and now potentially the rest of us will face it. Fascinating to see all the Russians online going nuts over this, when days ago they were either pushing for more violence to "win" and had nothing to say about the atrocities performed by their army. I realize it's not all Russians like that, but they have come out of the woodwork like crazy in the past few hours.
With all this uncertainty I'm just glad my FIL got out of Russia literally last week and is safe. Don't want to imagine how terrible it would be for him to be trapped in Russia with this going on.

It's all true except for we didn't really support the war prior to mobilization either. And right now the level of support is in the gutter.

Good luck during these hard times, we all know you didn't ask for this war. If the worst should happen, are you able to get your kids/wife out since they are Americans?

I don't see it. The only leader that really successfully capitulated was Gorbachev, and nobody wants to be Gorbachev now. Russia has been led by strongmen for far longer than the lifetime of the oldest person there. Maybe I'm wrong but I don't see how a person wanting to withdraw takes over in a true power with Putin dead. Of Putin does the next leader will be the next most feared person around and they won't be able to show weakness. There's literally zero off-ramp apart from mass revolt.

People with money and the option to leave. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a sudden spike in accidents.
You wouldn't need to google that stuff though, or the question wouldn't be "how to break an arm" but rather things like "how to fake an injury" or "long lasting injuries that heal well", or something lika that.
So yeah this is likely fake.

Kids - yes, wife - no, as she's Russian. One possible last resort scenario could be putting kids alone in the plane and ask my aunt and/or cousins to pick them up in USA side. It's complicated though as there are no direct flights and our relatives in USA, though friendly, are not really expecting to care for two kids. As it is, we are considering our options. As things stand, I likely won't be conscripted this year. I am likely to be conscripted next spring though.

If the LNR/DNR "mobilization" tells us anything, do not go out in public if at all possible. They may resort to handing out subpoenas or grabbing you and press ganging you to an enlistment office. The legal rules of the mobilization aren't what Putin said in his speech.

First of all, thank you for continuing to post here. I really appreciate hearing from an 'insider'.
Apologies if I've missed it, and I don't want to look through the lense of hindsight, but did you ever consider leaving Russia in the preceding months? Was there a big push for this from others, or was there a general feeling of 'this too shall pass'?
Again, really appreciate your insight.

Jesus man. What a ####show this has all become and for no reason other than some POS psychopath and his goons trying to "save face", whatever that looks like.

Yup, it all comes down to one insecure man and Biden just called him out in the UN: "in the last year our world has experienced great upheaval" and a "brutal needless war chosen by one man".

Sorry for this but I think there is going to be some form of war in Eastern Europe and parts of Asia. Russia is going keep at it for whatever reason and China is going to move on Taiwan. Both Russia and China are going to keep poking at NATO, the hate is deep.
