The point is that if you call him racist for his policy on Mexicans you imply that anyone anti Mexican immigration is racist. When someone feels you are calling them a racist they are unlikely to listen to you. So if you wanted to have a rational conversation with someone about building a wall it might help to not call them racist first.

yup that goes for anything. If you start a conversation calling someone old, racist, uneducated, religious wingnut etc... you just push them further away.

So I skimmed Trump's speech quickly. Of course there's the usual 'blame Hillary for everything that's wrong in the world' and the usual 'I am the best and I can fix everything' stuff, but I really am wondering how he's going to accomplish this stuff.
He says there will be massive tax reductions and yet he wants to spend money on things like rebuilding the military, which ain't cheap and cut back the national debt. Good luck with that.
He wants to end crime and all the shootings in the country, yet made sure later in the speech to mention he'll protect the 2nd amendment and even gave a shout out to the NRA. Okay.
And he even brought up the stupid wall. Yikes.
But the speech probably accomplishes what he wants........slam the crap out of Hillary, facts be damned, and make himself look like a saviour. The people there will eat it up.

But it does matter who is POTUS, depending on whether or not we can gut the Senate/House of the GOP obstructionist who have done their damnedest to keep Obama from accomplishing anything.
If the Senate/House remains in power of the GOP, with Trump at the helm--and thus giving the actual power of the POTUS office to Pence--the GOP led House/Senate are going to do their best to stop Planned Parenthood, dial back the LGBT rights that have been won in the last 8 years, they're going to expand on Religious Freedom (because their religious beliefs are more important than the basic human rights of the people they disagree with), they're going to eliminate the Affordable Care Act (and in doing so, take away affordable healthcare from millions of people), they're going to privatize Social Security and Medicare, gut the social safety net, completely and totally hamstring the EPA, etc. The only thing that's kept this Congress from doing this stuff is that Obama was at the helm to veto it.
Also the POTUS matters massively in this election, because the next POTUS is likely going to replace 3 SCOTUS members, and that has huge implications for the future of this country.

There's been some interesting chatter that Paul Manafort, Trump's campaign manager, is actually working for Putin. He has been on the Putin payroll in the past. Maybe he is, maybe he isn't, but he's been inflicting a lot of damage towards Trump this week with horrible explanations and stupid comments. Such as...
Quote:
Asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews how the campaign would deal with its problem of women perceiving Trump's criticism as sexist, Manafort acknowledged that it is a challenge.
"But again, it depends which women you are talking about. Many women in this country feel they can't afford their lives, their husbands can't afford ... paying for the family bills," Manafort said. "Hillary Clinton is guilty of being part of the establishment that created that problem. They’re going to hear the message. And as they hear the message, that's how we will appeal to them."

You are right. Debating the correct accurate and precise use of words is not semantics, but a semantic debate. I can totally appreciate the significance of that difference.
More seriously however, you seem to (quite often) forget that words also have connotations, which are actually more relevant in everyday communication than technical meaning.
Everyday language is not by its nature precise and accurate, nor is it even that desirable.

That Globe and Mail article actually helped me figure out why I'm so sure Trump will win - it's Ford for Mayor all over again.

Ford did it first and Ford did it better.
I guess, given more time and power, he might have been just as sinister as Trump, but for the most part he was just hilarious.

The point is, it is absolutely important to understand what it means to be "racist". You can't deny that, while at the same time thinking that it matters whether someone is or isn't racist. One entails the other.

Peter Thiel's speech was actually pretty good.
I thought he was going to endorse Bernie at the beginning, but turned a 180 towards the end. Weird he's a Trump supporter.

"I feel like the anchovy on Ivanka's caesar salad. I know you're salivating for that and you're going to get it".
Those were the first words out of this guy's (Tom Barrack) mouth.
What the hell does that mean?

I still cannot believe Trump is the nominee. Going into this thing I was sure it was going to be another Bush and another Clinton for the big chair. Turd Sandwich v. Giant ###### and all that. ...Which came to fruition anyways.

I guess the only thing I can't believe about Trump being the nominee is that it's Donald Trump who is the guy, I always thought it'd be Cruz, but more religious apocalyptic instead of white genocide apocalyptic. That the GOP candidate is this kind of candidate isn't surprising, this type of run has been available for a few election cycles now.

I'm pretty underwhelmed by Ivanka's speech. Maybe there was just too much media hype but I expected something more powerful, moving and deep.

Huh. Talking about ending wage inequality and promising affordable childcare for all.
I think she's in the wrong place.
